The Woodworker Magazine October 2010 In this month’s issue: It’s been a pretty good year for al fresco woodworking. Several months of mainly dry weather have allowed many of us to get out of the workshop and onto the lawn, the patio or the drive – anywhere where there’s enough room to cut up a few 8 by 4 sheets and assemble that project that just won’t fi t between the bench and the wood store. Shortage of space is a common enough problem for woodworkers everywhere. We’d all like a bigger workshop, more storage space and room to spread ourselves about a bit. However, nothing is beyond the twin powers of ingenuity and lateral thinking – just read Vere Shannon’s piece on managing your workspace on page 49 for some inspiration. Quart? Pint pot? No problem! Elsewhere in the issue we have an assortment of tasty projects for you to make, including an interesting challenge undertaken by Keith Smith – to keep the clock running while using mainly hand tools to fi nish a small oak hall table. Even he was amazed at how the time fl ew! Last but by no means least, we have a Woodworker exclusive for you this month. Alan Holtham has managed to lay his hands on the only sample in the country of Bosch’s new twin-base router, and has been putting it through its paces in his workshop. He reports that it’s every bit as good as the hype, and for sheer versatility sets the benchmark for performance in the mid-power range that rivals will do well to challenge. Read all about it on page 72!

In this month's issue of The Woodworker - June 2010This is Ralph Laughton’s swan-song as editor, and he’s certainly going out on a high note with the usual mix of projects, techniques, turning and tests to keep you entertained and enthused. He’s handing over the editorship to Mike Lawrence, who has been down in the engine room keeping the good ship Woodworker running smoothly for the last three years or so. Mike’s background is in mainstream DIY rather than pure woodwork, but he’s dedicated to maintaining the magazine’s direction as ‘the original and best’ woodworking title around. Ralph will still of course be a regular contributor to the magazine…This month’s issue opens with a clutch of projects, including:• Chop & change – Alan Holtham makes a work station for his mitre saw;• Made to measure – Ralph Laughton presents a storage case for his Incra instruments;• Colouring box – Peter Dunsmore makes his daughter a portable writing slope• Three in a row – Gordon Warr designs a simple plant trough. In the workshop you’ll find features on using tool rests and jigs to get the best performance from your bench grinder, and a look at what’s involved in setting up your bench planes for optimum performance. The turners can try their hand at some copy turning with Alan Holtham’s three-legged stool, making Chris Child’s egg timer, or tackling some basic indexing techniques on the way to creating Ian Wilkie’s spotty pot.Our test section includes reports on the following tools and equipment:• DeWalt 125mm random orbit sander• Scheppach HF3000 CI spindle moulder• Tuffsaw bandsaw blades• Skil 1215 belt sander• SIP 01470 12in sliding mitre saw• Makita KP0800 planer• Trend BCS bar clamps• GemRed bevel box and digital laser level• Robert Sorby indexing system

Popular Patchwork Magazine August 2010 Our cover project this month is a beautiful contemporary seasonal leaf design from Sheena Norquay. Both this and our more traditional Four Seaons project by Chris Hammacott can be adapted to suit your home and colours schemes and the Seasonal Leaves wall hanging/placemats would make great gifts. Our Square Dance is all about photo manipulation this month, and there is a gorgeous Landscape wall hanging from Nikki Tinkler. Wendy Sheppard’s Cosy Patch adds a little more to the mix, combining machined and cross-cut strips and half square triangles to create this very cuddly, floral quilt. Lynne Edwards has just published a new edition of her brilliant Sampler Quilt book, and we are lucky enough to include an extract from the book in our August project pages. Catch up with the wonderful Jenny Bowker and her marvellous applique quilts in this issue. If you are heading to the Festival of Quilts this year on the hunt for a new sewing machine then the Don’t Panic Guide to Today’s Sewing Machine Shop will give you some useful tips. There are £350 worth of prizes and giveaways in this issue, and three fantastic reader offers on new quilting books. Check the bits and pieces section for all our prize draws.
