Square Dance by Jane Rae Jane Rae shows us how to create a simple but dramatic stained glass effect mini quilt in the 5th project of our monthly Square Dance series... Jane has been experimenting with piecing batiks and silks together with a view to making a wall hanging. She realised as she started to lay out the blocks that sheneeded a strong contrasting colour to ‘cut across’ the jewel colours that she’d selected. It was with this in mind that she started exploring the use of black leading, as used in creating stained glass windows to bring all of her blocks together into a uniform design. This block here is the first of several that she is experimenting with and she finds that the idea of creating a small quilt as a test run for a larger project can be an invaluable exercise. Even if you don’t use your ‘experiments’ in your final piece, you can still build up a lovely portfolio of 10in quilts. Finished size: 10 square This project is an extract from Popular Patchwork magazine first published in May 2010. It is a Digital Edition and comes as a downloadable PDF file.
