Captain Scott perished with four of his fellow explorers on their return from the South Pole in March 1912. Almost immediately the myth was founded, based on Scott's diaries, turning him into an icon of courage in the face of impossible circumstances. But during the final months of that journey Scott also took a series of breathtaking photographs: panoramas of the continent, superb depictions of mountains and formations of ice and snow, and photographs of the explorers on the polar trail. But these photos have never been seen - initially fought over, neglected, then lost - until now, that is. For the first time, they are resurrected and are a humbling testament to the men whose graves still lie unmarked in the vastness of the Great Alone.
The Malvern Hills, an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, have fired the imagination of painters, poets, writers, composers and scientists for many years. And the area has not lost any of its power to surprise, charm and thrill. The Malverns run almost directly north-south along the Herefordshire-Worcestershire border, dipping into Gloucestershire at its southern most end. The special quality of the Malverns lies in the contrasts. They make up an easily identifiable narrow ridge that thrust above the patchwork farmland of the Severn Vale 600 million years ago, producing a mountain range in miniature. Mike Smart's collection of photographs capture the spirit of these hills.
The Sea portrays the wonders of the world's wet, wide, diverse expanses in 1001 photos. This is a new edition of the classic photographic book containing the walk A. Wainwright devised in 1973, covering rights of way and areas of open access between the Irish sea and the North Sea. The route starts at St Bees Head and finishes at Robin Hood Bay, passing through three National Parks: the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors, all areas of outstanding beauty. Providing a wide and varied range of scenery with changing landscapes over a distance of 190 miles, it is one of the most challenging of long-distance walks.
This is the seventh of Bill Birkett's prize-winning and widely praised photographic essays which portray, throughout the seasons, his love affair with the wildest and most impressive mountain areas of Britain. Snowdonia, the third largest National Park in Britain, is unsurpassed in its variety of landscape. It ranges through the high rugged mountains around Snowdon to the far-flung high groups of the Rhinogs, Arennigs and Arans, and the mighty Cadair Idris. It stretches some 85 kilometres - from Conwy and its magnificent castle in the north to Aberdovey and its Roman road in the south. Snowdonia attracts over 6 million visitors annually. A leading centre for all who love the natural world and a major recreational area for climbers and walkers, it is not a region of complete wildness: adding to its character are the 27, 500 people who live and work there, in the heartland of Welsh-speaking Wales. Some 65 per cent of the inhabitants have Welsh as their first language, and have strong links with other peoples of the Atlantic coast, such as Cornwall, Brittany and the Basque region of Spain. At 1, 085 metres, Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales and higher than any mountain in England; its evocative Welsh name Eryri means 'place of the eagles'. Along with some of the most dramatic and magnificent scenery in Britain, Eryri contains a huge variety of habitats for animals, birds and plants. Between the sea and the mountains the region has 37 kilometres of coastline, with beaches cut by deep estuaries. Above the coast, glacially carved valleys fed by mountain lakes and streams support the remnants of broad-leaved woodlands of oak, ash, rowan and hazel. There are more National Nature Reserves in Eryri than in any other National Park in Britain.
London's oldest enclosed Royal Park, first established in 1433, Greenwich Park includes several notable buildings and offers some of the finest views of London and the River Thames. Designers who worked here include Andre le Notre, the French royal landscape designer who laid out the gardens at Versailles, and Inido Jones, who designed the Queen's House. On the northern boundary lies the old Royal Naval College by Christopher Wren, perhaps the greatest baroque building complex in Britain. the park itself is host to herds of deer, and its noble avenues of trees, its spring daffodils and its huge expanses of grass have long made it a favourite haunt of the people and animals of South London looking for fresh air and open spaces. Rising above the trees at the centre is the great dome of the Royal Observatory, home to the Prime Meridian Line, and world famous in the annals of navigation and timekeeping. This collection of outstanding photographs captures the magic of the park through the year, and the thoughtful, well informed text highlights its many notable and remarkable features.
Pembrokeshire occupies the far south western extremity of Wales with the ocean on three sides. Its coastline is complex and convoluted - a succession of cliffs and coves, inlets and islands, stacks and skerries and the great drowned estuary of Milford Haven. Many justly claim this coastal scenery to be among the finest in the World. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path, an official National Trail designated in 1970, closely follows this coast from Amroth in the south to St.Dogmael's in the north - a distance of 186 miles - almost entirely within a National Park. As the meeting place of Celts, Irish, Vikings, Welsh, Normans, English and Flemings, Pembrokeshire is steeped in history and thanks in part to its fascinating geology its shores are especially rich in distinctive flora and fauna. Nowhere is the Coast Path far from historic sites and charming villages or the fascinating small towns of St David's, Pembroke and Tenby. Flavoured by the moods of the ocean, this book captures the atmosphere of the Coast Path and the ever-changing landscapes, seascapes and the settlements through which it passes. It will evoke treasured memories for those who already know Pembrokeshire, and enthuse those for whom that pleasure is yet to come.
