Ten Minute Maths Assessments closely matches the Primary framework and also ties in extremely well with the Williams interim review which states 'A renewed and sharper focus on the use of mental mathematics would be beneficial, and would particularly help under-attaining groups of children'. The tests are quick and easy to administer and would provide a 'snap shot' of where each pupil is - perfect for on-going periodic assessment introduced as part of APP. Andrew has analysed the Primary Mathematics framework carefully and worked out the number of learning objectives that can be successfully tested in each year group. By taking the framework and breaking it down into small 'steps for learning' each test focuses on what the pupils are actually learning in class. The teacher can then give the test to a group of pupils, who have been working on one of these steps, to monitor their progress. The teacher records the results on the assessment grid and, over a period of time, builds a clear picture of each pupil's NC level. This approach is very much the thrust of the latest developments in assessment: Assessment for Learning, Assessing Pupils' Progress.

It offers a systematic approach to spelling from the starting point of synthetic phonics through to the observation of phonic patterns in more complex words. Repetition and practice are key features of the 'Supporting' series and every target in these books will have an introductory display page, focusing on a particular phoneme, followed by an activity page. All the books include 'target' record sheets showing NC objectives, templates for indiviual education plans, and progress charts to track achievement.

This series, like Supporting Literacy, builds on Andres Brodie's aptitude for making things really straightforward for less able pupils. Teachers need materials that are suitable for the increasing number of lower ability children in the mainstream classroom. These children who need 'additional' or 'different' help (roughly one in six children fall into this category), are often supervised by classroom assistants. National Test results indicate that children, especially boys, are struggling with their writing. 'One in five children who enter secondary school are officially behind in reading and writing.' Inspectors also reported on the continuing gap between girls and boys, which they say is particularly pronounced in writing. All activities are linked to the new Literacy framework through a process of 'tracking back' and are intended to help lower ability pupils make progress in order to catch up with their year group. Each learning objective is addressed by one or more pages and each page will include notes for teachers enabling anyone using the sheet to see its purpose immediately. Recording and monitoring pupil's progress are integral to all books.

An exciting new series of Maths titles from Andrew Brodie focusing on the teaching of number and calculation skills. Primary children are now taught number and calculation skills using a range of different methods. This range and variety is most noticeable at Key Stage 2 but the foundations are laid in Key Stage 1. The most obvious difficulties emerge with how to teach multiplication. Most schools are now using a grid method, which should lead through to a vertical format, but many teachers are not clear as to when to make the switch or how to do it. What Number Journey provides is a clear, logical progression with lots of practice at each step along the way. It covers the four rules: addition, subtraction and multiplication and specify particular methods for each one. Most of the materials that are currently on the market are full maths programmes addressing all aspects of maths, including 'using and applying mathematics', or are targeting narrow areas such as mental maths. Number Journey would address strands 2, 3 and 4 of the new Mathematics framework: 'counting and understanding number', 'knowing and using number facts' and 'calculating'. An extremely useful feature of the series is the letters to parents helping schools to explain to parents the approach being used.

Mental maths is still a key part of the end of KS2 National Tests and so schools are striving for pupils to do even better than the average Level 3. This book follows on from Mental Maths in Minutes 9-11 so is ideal for stretching very able pupils but is also an excellent resource for the first year of secondary school. Specific skills such as addition, subtraction, doubling, halving, multiplying and dividing are addressed repeatedly, but each time at a higher level of understanding. As with the other books in the series, the Extension book features forty mental maths practice sheets together with forty matching answer sheets. Each sheet has at least two, and normally four, columns of questions that pupils can answer quickly. Guidance for teachers suggests that the sheets are used at the start of maths lessons and that pupils should be given one minute for each column. Andrew has found a particularly successful technique is for pupils to complete one column, mark it themselves and then do a second column straight away to see if they can improve on their mark. An entire sheet takes approx 10 minutes which makes it perfect for lesson starters.
