There probably wasn't much to laugh about before the 1380's. Then 'The Millers Tale' from Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' kicked off the long and venerable tradition in which British humour is rooted. The rise and rise of sauce and smut was most likely the general reaction to Puritan intolerance. Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll popularised nonsense while the traditional Christmas Panto launched social role reversal. So enormous was the contribution of Music Hall and Variety Theatre to the heritage of British Comedy that it defies classification. British Comedy's primary component has to be the richness of the English language and the endless scope it provides for word play. On this robust foundation is a magical mix of vital components that includes: Puns (that rarely - if ever - translate, nonsense (Brits are full of it), black humour, eccentricity, satire, sarcasm, self-depreciation and understatement. Then there's disrespect for the establishment (Private Eye), the absurd (The Goon Show), the manic (Bottom), everyday unconscious humour (The Office), the class system (To The Manor Born), the lovable rogue (Andy Capp), the humiliation of social ineptitude (Mr. Bean), making fun of foreigners ('Allo 'Allo), bullying and harsh sarcasm (Blackadder), parodies of stereotypes (Beyond the Fringe), and affection for eccentricity (Heath-Robinson). That's the fertile background. But the single most vital component is undoubtedly matchless comedic talent. That's what makes classic comedy classic. Contains 3 CDs

Crime novelist and detective Paul Temple and his glamorous wife Steve first appeared on BBC Radio in 1938. They inhabited a sophisticated world of cocktails and fast cars, where the women were chic and the men wore cravats - a world where Sir Graham Forbes, of Scotland Yard, usually needed Temple's help with his latest tricky case.
The radio serials proved so popular that Francis Durbridge was inspired to write a succession of novels featuring the smooth sleuth. Paul Temple and the Curzon Case is a gripping story of kidnapping, intrigue and sudden death read by Buffy and Little Britain star Anthony Head.
An aeroplane crashes on the cliffs of Dulworth Bay, and two boys disappear from a public school in the same village. Are the two events connected? And who is the mysterious Curzon? His name first appears etched on a cricket bat owned by one of the missing Baxter boys, but nobody at the school, in the village or the boys' father has heard of him.
When another boy vanishes, and a murder occurs. Paul knows that only by fitting a face to the name can he end Curzon's reign of terror..
The Lords and Ladies of Laughter get you giggling in the Great British tradition. Listen. And chortle, shriek, hoot, chuckle, crow, cackle, snigger, snicker, titter and whoop away. It's that uniquely British ability to laugh at oneself that makes our comedy different. The great classic comedic performances are timeless and now, years later, they still work brilliantly. It's fast, furious and funny. Characterised by quick fire dialogue, American comedy tends to be more wordy that the UK variety; 'punch line' and 'one liners' being intrinsic ingredients. It requires quick wit, sharp insights and rapid reaction. Contains 3 CDs
