The Jean Faure has just regained its Grand Cru Classe status and is an absolute gem when you consider the pedigree of the neighbouring vineyards. Wines have been produced by the Amoreau family at Chateau le Puy since 1610, this one being made from vines with an age of 55 years.
A versatile, uncomplicated white wine that would match well with pea risotto, or grilled chicken salad, for example. Bodegas Perica was initially started by Juan Garcia as a small outfit in San Asensio, Rioja, that sold wine for local consumption, and also to neighbouring towns. But Juan was a good businessman and gradually built up his bodega. His son, David Garcia, took over and registered the bodega's name as Perica, which was the nickname he was known by, in 1950. Now it's David's children, the third generation, who run Bodegas Perica. They're based in the Rioja Alta subregion, with over 140 hectares of their own vineyards, all of which are harvested by hand. In the state-or-the-art winery, built in 2011, winemaker Rafel Garcia uses a mixture of French and American oak barrels to fashion wines that have retained the best of the region's tradition, but with a distinctly contemporary twist. Fresh and bright, with pear, apple and citrus fruit. Nice depth of flavour here: crisp and fruity style thatands uncomplicated and very drinkable.
This is great on its own, served well chilled. Or try it with garlic prawns, or a green leaf salad with plenty of dressing. Mid-pink in colour with a hint of orange. This is fruity and lively with some cherry fruit, as well as a subtle herbal twist. A dry, fruity style of rose.
Great on its own, but would be really good with chorizo sausages or char-grilled steak. Lovely bright, direct berry and cherry fruit is the dominant theme here. This is a delicously fruity red with hints of spice adding a savoury dimension. Skilful modern winemaking.
This traditional Mediterranean grape lends itself to food of a similar ilk. Think grilled fish and vegetables, shellfish and white meats. The citrus zing and floral character also makes this a good pairing for aromatc Asian spices. Chateau La Coste was bought in 2002 by London based hotelier Paddy McKillen. The first few vintages were nothing special so in 2006 he involved Matthieu Cosse of Domaine Cosse-Maisoneuve fame on the project. Cosseands methods of respecting the land and surrounding ecosystem by using organic methods certainly did the trick as Chateau La Coste wines became much lauded in Provence. A complex wine with a rich and powerful nose. Aromas of candied fruits accompany notes of white fruits and hints of citrus. Flowers and spices can also be detected along with toasted wood. Round in the mouth, smooth and fresh with a lovely citrus fruit finish typical of the Vermentino grape.
Pierre-Jean Villa is a well-known negociant in the northern Rhone region, where he was part of the team behind the successful Vins de Vienne project, which he was involved with from 2003â2009. When he left, he decided to embark on two ventures. The first was to create his own domaine in the nothern Rhone, to make Syrah. The second was to partner with Olivier Decelle, owner of Mas Amiel in Maury and Chateau Jean Faure in Saint-Emilion, to create a new domain in Nuits-Saint Georges, Burgundy, to work with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. As with all Decelle's ventures, soil health is key, and the 3 hectares of Decelle-Villa vineyard holdings are all managed with organics or biodynamics. Concentrated, rich, nutty and spicy with bold pear and peach fruit, some hazelnuts, and spicy oak. Very nutty and rich with lively spiciness and zippy acidity. A fresh, richly flavoured white Burgundy like this is an ideal match for richer flavoured seafood such as scallops or monkfish, and would also work very well with game birds.

The ageing process applied to these wines creates an incredible level of complexity. Both wines can last for months after being opening, so they truly are wines to be savoured.
It is Christmas. It is time to treat yourself. These six bottles represent the pinnacle of fine wine production, and while they aren't cheap, compared with their qualitative peers, they offer good value. We start with a Champagne made by one of the rising stars in the region, which delivers true complexity and finesse. Then, a true classic: a Premier Cru Chablis from leading producer Charly Nicolle, followed by another white Burgundy, a leading example of Pouilly Fuisse from Sophie Cinier. We have two superb Clarets, both from the sensational 2009 vintage, and made at small, high quality properties: Chantelune in Margaux, and Jean Faure in Saint Emilion. These are truly world class Bordeaux wines, but compared with their peers, they are underpriced. Finally, to finish with, one of the world's great sweet wines: the deliciously complex 15 year old Maury from top producer Mas Amiel.
Perfect as an aperitif but also great to match with grilled fish and salad in the summer. In autumn and winter this wine will work well with light fish dishes, spicy Asian cuisine and rich cheeses. Stephanie Ponson and Frederick Porro are both well respected winemakers in their own right but came together to create Domaine Mas Agrunelles. They are certified biodynamic winemakers and believe smaller yields will lead to higher quality. Dry, rounded and expressive with great citrus fruit aromas and white flowers. The palate is full, fruity and just a little bit spicy finishing with lots of freshness. A delightful wine for the summertime.
