A big, dark & complex wine like this is a great partner for food, but the food needs to be up to the job. Big flavours work well, such as leg of mutton roasted with anchovies, marinated haunch of venison with a good jus, or anything ratatouille-based where the savouriness of green pepper & aubergines is dominant. Cortijo de la Vieja is situated on the slopes of Sierra de Gador, looking across to the Mulhacen, Spain's highest mountain, & other peaks on the Sierra Nevada range. This wine is a blend of Tempranillo, Merlot & Syrah grapes, with late harvest Petit Verdot, all aged in different American barrels for eight months to intensify the flavours. Very dark, almost black, with garnet hints. On the nose it is richly complex, offering plum, fig & date aromas with bitter chocolate, cinnamon, smoke & minerally baked earth nuances. In the mouth it is very smooth & full, with good tannins cutting through the sumptuous dark flavours. The finish is dark & long.
