rear chrome bumpers made
their last appearance.
The age of
mirror-polished, bright
metal bracelets which had
been the finishing touch
of this elegant and
aggressive Muscle Car
since its birth in 1953
would disappear from all
factory Corvette® autos
built to date. The
Corvette® chrome bling
would be replaced with a
body colour bumper in the
front in 1973 and both
front and rear by 1974.
The 1972 Corvette® was
also the last year for
the removable rear window
on the coupe and the
legendary LT-1
solid-lifter,
high-compression engine
option, making it a
must-have Corvette® for

collector. The LT-1
engine designation would
reappear again 1992 as a
new and improved base 350
engine, much different
from this "70s
powerhouse. Although the
horsepower rating for the
1972 LT-1 would
experience a dramatic
decrease from 330 hp in

she maintained her sleek
profile and elegant
styling, even adding for
the first time on the

the 327cid remained a
stalwart, time-tested
option. Open the hood of

1966 was another banner
year for Corvette®. This
model year was the
beginning of a Big Block
legend that would last
until 1969 and would not
appear again under the
hood of any Corvette®
until the 2006 Z06
supercar was unveiled. In
1966, the 427 cubic inch
engine was offered at two
horsepower ratings--390
and the coveted L72 425.
GM® originally rated
this motor at 450 but
later reduced it to 425
hp as an administrative
change, with no changes
being made to the engine
itself. In the shadow of
the new big block lay the
faithful and time-tested
327 cubic inch engine,
which continued to be the
standard equipment motor
in 1966. Since 1962,
this small block had been
reliably pushing the
Corvette® up and down
the street and the strip
and would continue to do
so until 1969, when the
350 was introduced. Like
the big block, the 327
engine was also offered
in two horsepower
ratings--300 being the
standard base equipment
engine, and for an
additional $105.35 you
could add the L79 350
horsepower option. While
not being a 427, it fell
somewhere in between and
was not a bad compromise!
With its lighter weight
and equal compression
rating, the L79 offered
modest acceleration and
performance that any
Muscle Car enthusiast
would love to have under
foot. Add to this
mid-sixties classic a
convertible option and
you had a true
middle-of-the-road

1965 introduced the first
GM® factory big block
option for any
Corvette®. The powerful
396 Turbo Jet engine
delivered 425 hp and 415
foot-pounds of torque.
This was a quantum leap
from previous years,
with 375 hp the highest
option offered in 1964.
With this new factory
muscle under the hood,
the "65 Corvette® was
just as much at home on
the track as the street.
In fact, most who
purchased this option
drove their
Corvettes®…a quarter
mile at a time! The 1965
Corvette® was also the
first year to offer the
new “bulge hood, ”
designed for the big
block option, and the
first Corvette® to have
side exhaust pipes and a
power radio antenna. The
1965 model year was also
the omega Corvette®. It
was the last “fuelie”

and delivered a 0-60 time
of less than 4 seconds.
Responsible for this was
the all-new LS7 engine
with the largest
displacement small block
ever produced by GM®.
Inside, the lightweight
components, including
titanium, assist in
getting the power to the
pavement without adding
excessive weight. The
body, too, has a unique
aluminium structure for
optimum rigidity and
light weight for the
fixed roof style. A wide
front with forward-facing
grill opening and
splitter along the sides
provides aerodynamic
down-force. In fact, the
aerodynamics of the
Z06’s shape was

Z06 with its 505
horsepower is capable of
198 mph and a 0-60 mph
time of 3.7 seconds. It
has sophisticated
aerodynamics, a
suspension that can
handle 1.01 Gs in for
cornering and large
18-inch front and 19-inch
rear wheels that are a
foot wide in the rear.
Pace cars are expected
to endure strenuous use.
For example, during the
last four Indy 500®
races, the Chevy® pace
vehicles led the field
for a combined 186 laps
of the total 800 laps
driven. That"s 2, 000
miles! It"s no wonder
that the high performance
2006 Corvette® Z06 was
eminently suitable for
pace car duties. For the
2006 race the Pace car
featured a patriotic red,
white and blue theme.

CaminoTM for 1971. Still,
there was nothing timid
about the LS5 454 V-8
that actually generated
5bhp more than the
previous year. This
spectacular model
features the definitive
re-creation of that
powerhouse engine, in
addition to
cowl-induction hood and
single headlight design
that made the El Camino
so easy on the eye. Is
it a luxury car or a pick
up truck? The El CaminoTM
(Spanish for “the
road”) prompted this
question since its
introduction in 1959 and
collectors of Chevrolet®
classics debate it to
this day. The truck/car
hybrid idea, first
embodied by Ford’s
Ranchero the year before,
proved to be a popular
idea at the time,
combining the best of
both vehicle
characteristics. Although
the first two years of
production were slow and
the model name
disappeared for a time,
the El CaminoTM was
reintroduced in 1964.
This time, the El
CaminoTM shared the
Chevelle® platform and
styling and offered two
engines—a 283 and a 327
cid V-8. High performance
was given high priority
and the trend continued
into the next decade.
1971 saw the
availability of a new
SSTM 454. The SSTM
designation for the El
CaminoTM guaranteed not
only special badges and
accents, but
high-performance
equipment and a
feather-light rear end
that allowed the driver
to easily “burn out,
” smoking the tires to
the rims. In 1971, the
El CaminoTM SSTM received
the same styling cues as
the Chevelle®, such as
the new, more-blunted
“V” front end and a
new, black-accented
grille. Custom trim was
standard for the Super
Sport and a popular cowl
induction hood was
optional. For the SSTM,
it had sport mirrors,
optional striping,
badges and 15x7 Rally
rims available, along
with a choice of four
engines. Many El
CaminosTM from this era
are still used as daily
drivers and some are used
in various racing venues,
but most have found
their way into the
collections of serious
Chevrolet® performance
car enthusiasts’
garages. Now, Franklin
Mint Precision Models has
re-created the 1971 El
CaminoTM SSTM 454 in
exciting detail—sure to
be a front-runner in any
die-cast collector’s
list of “must have”
models.
