Tyrozets Tyrozets Lozenges dissolve in the mouth reaching the painful throat area at the back of the mouth before and during swallowing. Dual Action Tyrozets anaesthetic to quickly numb throat pain antibiotic to help fight throat infection Aniseed flavoured lozenges Please read your own leaflet carefully before you use this medicine. This leaflet provides a summary of the information available on Tyrozets. If you have any queries about this medicine or are not sure about anything, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Keep this leaflet until you have finished your Tyrozets; you may want to read it again. What is in the lozenges? Tyrozets are pink aniseed flavoured lozenges Each containing: tyrothricin 1 mg and benzocaine 5 mg. Other ingredients are: acacia, magnesium stearate, maize starch, sodium chloride, sucrose, anethole, erythrosine (E127) and peppermint oil. The sodium content is 2.3 mg (0.1 mmol) per lozenge. How do the lozenges work Tyrozets contain an antibiotic, tyrothricin, to help fight throat infection and a local anaesthetic, benzocaine, to numb sore throat pain quickly. The lozenges dissolve in the mouth, gradually releasing the active ingredients which reach the painful throat area at the back of the mouth before and during swallowing. What are Tyrozets used for? Tyrozets are used for the relief of sore throats and minor mouth irritations. Tyrozets may also be taken to relieve irritation after mouth and throat surgery e.g. having your tonsils taken out. Before using Tyrozets Do not take it if you are allergic to tyrothricin, benzocaine or any other ingredient in this product. If you think you have become allergic during use, stop treatment immediately and see your doctor. Report any unwanted effects to your doctor or pharmacist. How should you take Tyrozets? Adults and children over 3 years: dissolve one lozenge slowly in the mouth and repeat every three hours. Adults do not take more than 8 lozenges in 24 hours. Childrens reduced dosage: Children do not take more than 6 lozenges in 24 hours. Tyrozets are not recommended for children under the age of 3 years. To benefit from Tyrozets you should suck the lozenges and not swallow them whole. They are for oral (mouth) use only. If you do not obtain satisfactory relief within 2 days consider discontinuing use and consult your doctor. Do not use for longer than 5 consecutive days Will the lozenges suit you? Most people get on very well with Tyrozets but if you think you are reacting badly in any way stop your treatment and see your doctor. In some patients blackness or soreness of the tongue may occur but this disappears when treatment is stopped. Skin rashes have been reported after benzocaine treatment. Rarely a disorder of haemoglobin in the blood (methaemoglobinaemia) has been reported in infants and children after benzocaine absorption. Tyrozets are not intended to replace other antibiotic medicines prescribed by your doctor but are an aid to prevention and control of local infections in the mouth and throat. Use of antibiotics can sometimes allow the development of infections different from those they are intended to treat. If you think you are developing a new or different infection stop taking Tyrozets and consult your doctor about further treatment. As Tyrozets contain a local anaesthetic you may wish to avoid eating when local anaesthesia (numbness) in the mouth is at its greatest. It is a good idea to rinse the mouth after eating to avoid any further irritation to the mouth lining by small amounts of food left in the mouth. Tyrozets contain sucrose which is associated with dental decay and can interfere with the treatment of otherwise well controlled diabetes. What to do if an overdose of Tyrozets has been taken If you have accidentally taken too many Tyrozets, see your doctor at once or if not possible, telephone your local hospital casualty department. Tyrozets should only be sucked in the mouth and not taken any other way. Storing your lozenges Use by date: Do not use Tyrozets if they are past the expiry date on the box/base of tube Do not store above 25°C. Protect from light Remember: Keep all medicines out of the reach of children
