With images of protests last trains & the subsequent dereliction Julian Holland presents a vivid picture of this dramatic & drastic shake-up of Britain's railways. Julian Holland's Dr Beeching's Axe 50 Years On is a unique memorial to all that was lost following the publication of the ' Beeching Report' on 27 March 1963. Across the land railways were ripped up & communities were broken apart. Vast regions of England Scotland & Wales were left without a railway link to the outside world. Skilled railwaymen who for generations had loyally given their all to the 'company' were tossed aside for the sake of a politically motivated love affair with road transport. There was never any joined up thinking (' Integrated transport?' ' What's that?') it was never properly thought through & our country has suffered ever since
- witness the near gridlock on our motorways. Uniquely the author has tried to include every railway line that was closed as a result of the ' Beeching Report' & more. They are all shown on Map 9 in Part 2 of the ' Report' & have been annotated for clarity at the beginning of each regional chapter in the book. Needless to say it is not plain sailing: there are lines that were marked for closure on the maps but were closed before publication of the ' Report'; there are lines that were not originally on Beeching's original hit list but which were closed anyway; there are lines that were originally marked down for closure but which were fortunately reprieved. There are even one or two which seem to have not existed at all! The author has included them all.

The ten years from 1955 to 1965 arguably witnessed a greater upheaval in the way BR operated than the period surrounding privatisation. First came the 1955 Modernisation Plan when vast sums were invested in order to make the network more efficient. Then in 1962 Richard Beeching was appointed as BR chairman with a mandate to make the Railways run at a profit. The issues he faced were long-standing & very deep-seated & can be traced back over the previous hundred years. Both Modernisation & Beeching had momentous repercussions on BR & were more complementary than conflicting with each other. With steam already eliminated from some parts of the country & line closures beginning to prune the number of route miles the rail scene at the end of 1965 looked a lot different than it did a decade earlier. Beeching's work is often regarded as negative but yet it was mirrored years later by every railway system across Western Europe & had many supporters within BR top brass. Dr Beeching's Remedy puts Beeching's Reshaping report within the historical context of a century of railway evolution. The author is renowned for his knowledge of the history of Britain's railways having written extensively on the subject & his re-interpratation of the story has been aided by access to official files now open to the public at the National Archives. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the Beeching report this book is a timely re-evaluation from a broad perspective of the impact of the report. ...
