The Ardbeg Alligator Committee Release was given 94 points in Jim Murray’s Bible 2017. It a lovely example of what peat can achieve. It is a very complex & smoky dram. The Alligator in its name comes from the barrels being heavily charred that leaves an inner layer of charcoal that comes to resemble the skin of an alligator. This hotly anticipated official release of Ardbeg Alligator is aged in a similar style to the standard 10 year old, except for the fact that a portion of the whisky was aged in heavily charred barrels. The barrels are charred to such an extent that they start to crack a little on the inside, & this resembles alligator skin, thus the name. Nose: stunning aromas of charcoal, mulled wine & lemon icing sugar. Very creamy, with notes of vanilla & yoghurt, with a huge BBQ note. Some gingerbread & tangy apricots as well as burning brown sugar. Palate: Creamy & zesty, with a huge whack of grapefruit & lemon, as well as BBQ sauce, ginger & orange zest. Like a really toasty rye whiskey in parts, with hints of icing sugar, cocoa, gingernut biscuits & intense smoke. Finish: Sweet & creamy with peppery, crackling peat smouldering away for hours. ...

Much lighter than past Ardbegs with lighter peat & mocha notes. Palate: Creamy coffee to the fore, joined by dark chocolate & mocha, followed by a refreshing peachy character alongside peat & black pepper. A creamy texture, with the mocha notes continuing, joined by liquorice, & a whack of vanilla from the bourbon barrels. The peat is on the lighter side & isn't overpowering. Finish: Long. Cocoa, A lingering, smoky vanilla note with fruity notes slowly dissipating to leave spicy liquorice & peat smoke. ...
