By the award-winning author of The Twin. On a hot summer`s day in June 1969 everyone in the village gathered to welcome Queen Juliana. It would have been an unforgettable day of celebration if only the baker hadn`t been running late with his deliveries & knocked down little Hanne with his br&-new VW van. Years later, Jan arrives on a hot day in June in order to tidy his sister`s grave, & is overcome again with grief & silent fury. Isn`t it finally time to get to the bottom of things? June traces in spellbinding, tender detail how the ripples from one tragic incident spread through a community, a family & down the generations. ” Illuminating”. (Independent). ” Exceptional”. On June 28th, 1919, the Peace was signed in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, five years to the day after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo triggered Europe`s precipitous descent into war. Before long it had become the first conflict to be fought on a global scale. By its end in 1918, four empires had collapsed, & their minority populations, which had never before existed as independent entities, were encouraged to seek self-determination & nationhood. Following on from Haus`s monumental thirty-two Volume series on the signatories of the Versailles peace treaty, The Makers of the Modern World, ” June 28th” looks in greater depth at the smaller nations that are often ignored in general histories, & in doing so seeks to understand the conflict from a global perspective, asking not only how each of the signatories came to join the conflict but also giving an overview of the long-term consequences of their having done so. ...

the peaks of Mönch & Jungfrau with the upper station of the Jungfraujoch Railway, & extends southwards to cover the whole of the Aletschgletscher, the larger glacier in the Alps. Cartography, identical to the standard version of the survey, is highly regarded for its superb use of graphic relief & hill shading to provide an almost 3-D picture of Switzerland`s mountainous terrain. Contours are at 20m intervals. An overprint highlights routes maintained by the SHF, distinguishing between hiking routes, mountain routes requiring proper footwear, & alpine routes where equipment is needed. Paths which are part of the national or regional network of long-distance hiking routes are specially marked & in the more recent editions are annotated with their official numbers. The maps show mountain huts, refuges & in remote areas also inns, plus roads with bus service & the positions of bus stops. All the maps have a 1-km grid of the Swiss national coordinates.
