On June 28th, 1919, the Peace was signed in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, five years to the day after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo triggered Europe`s precipitous descent into war. Before long it had become the first conflict to be fought on a global scale. By its end in 1918, four empires had collapsed, & their minority populations, which had never before existed as independent entities, were encouraged to seek self-determination & nationhood. Following on from Haus`s monumental thirty-two Volume series on the signatories of the Versailles peace treaty, The Makers of the Modern World, ” June 28th” looks in greater depth at the smaller nations that are often ignored in general histories, & in doing so seeks to understand the conflict from a global perspective, asking not only how each of the signatories came to join the conflict but also giving an overview of the long-term consequences of their having done so. ...

33 specially selected hiking trails in the Jugfrau Region of the Bernese Oberland presented at 1:50, 000 on a waterproof & tear-resistant, contoured & GPS compatible map from the Hallwag/Kümmerly + Frey group, with route profiles, grading for the severity of the terrain & the degree of fitness required, etc. The map is centered on Grindelwald, with many routes starting in or near this resort; other trails start from Mürren, Wengen, Kleine Scheidegg, Meiringen, etc. The cartography provides an excellent picture of the terrain through contours at 25-metre intervals enhanced by shading, graphic relief for exposed rock, & colouring for glaciers & woodlands. All local footpaths are on the maps, but the overprint specifically highlights 33 trails selected by the publishers in collaboration with Geo-tracks. The colouring of each trail indicates the degree of fitness needed, from “no physical shape required” to “extremely high level of physical fitness necessary”. The trails start near a railway station or a bus stop (the colouring of the road network indicates routes with public transport & locations of individual bus stops). The maps have the lines of the Swiss national grid at 1-km intervals. On the reverse each trail has a route profile, its grading according to severity of the terrain & the degree of fitness required to attempt it, details of length & approximate timing, the change in altitude on assent & descent, plus a brief description. Map legend

Includes::
English; all the text on the reverse is in German. Each title also

a code for a free download onto a smartphone.
