Macarons are the aristocrats of pastry; these brightly coloured, mini meringues, daintily sandwiched together with gooey fillings, have become a holy grail for cookery fanatics & there are even food blogs dedicated to them. Like Pierre Herme`s famous macarons, it would be difficult for any macaron book to surpass this one & indeed the hardback edition has been a universal bestseller (still in print 978-1-908117-23-6). There are 208 pages of recipes & beautiful food photography, & because making macarons is mostly about technique, rather than just a standard recipe, readers will appreciate the 32-step-by-step photo-illustrated instructions for making shells & fillings. All the classics are here like dark chocolate, praline, coffee, & pistachio, but others feature the more unusual macarons that Herme is justly famous for: Isfahan is one, with lychee, rose & raspberry, Arabesque with apricot & pistachio, Satine with passion fruit, orange & cream cheese, Mandarin & pink pepper, black truffles, balsamic vinegar as well as a bright-green macaron filled with fresh mint. ...

Was Thomas Macaulay a cultural imperialist or a prophetic moderniser? He always inspired both admiration & hostility. He introduced English education to India, creating a class of westernised Indians often reviled as ` Macaulay`s children`, but today many former ` Untouchables` literally worship him as their liberator from caste tyranny. This new biography gives a vivid insight into one of the towering intellects of Victorian Britain, a brilliant, complex, self-made man, who rose from middle-class origins to the highest circles of the world`s largest empire. We follow his meteoric journey from child prodigy to Whig parliamentary orator, playing a major role in the passing of the Great Reform Act of 1832, then imperial administrator & liberal reformer in India, & later Cabinet minister, revered elder statesman & famed historian back in Britain. We also get a revealing portrait of his personal life as a bachelor romantically attached to his sisters. Masani reclaims Macaulay as a pioneer of globalisation based on the English language & Western values.A strong advocate of liberal interventionism across the globe, he was the ideological precursor of Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair & Western military interventions in the world`s trouble-spots. But he was also the architect of the `soft power` through which the West permeates the rest of the world. ...

This is a facsimile of Macauley`s Station Map of the Railways of Great Britain published in 1881 showing all the lines built & planned at that date & the owners of each line. By this date the railway network in Britain was largely complete but many changes took place between 1881 & the eve of the Grouping in 1923
- some of the planned lines were never built & many of the original owning companies were taken over by other companies. This is a portrait of Britain`s railways as the well known large companies (which ultimately came to be be narrowed down to the Big Four) were vying with a myriad of local lines to rationalise a network which had been built on the various demands of local communities & business interests throughout Britain. The book also comprises the 4th edition of Airey`s Railway Junction Diagrams which was published in 1880. This is the perfect complement to Macauley`s railway atlas as it shows in detail each contemporary railway junction in Britain where different (often competing) railway companies met on the network. The original volume of junction diagrams comprises 130 pages of maps which have been interposed in this edition with the relevant pages of the atlas.
