It was in 1815 that John Mc Dougall took out a licence, establishing Ardbeg as a legitimate firm. Since then it has been the most peated (i.e. smokiest) malt in the business. As everyone knows one of the main ingredients in whisky is the water used. The water used in Ardbeg comes from Loch Uigeadail which is situated Approx. 3 miles behind the distillery & gets mixed straight into the malt to create the mash. Water is added a total of 3 times to the mix all at different temperatures to create the perfect mash. Then it is time for the fermentation process. Ardbeg's fermentation process is longer than any other whisky taking a minimum of 55 hours. Once the mix is fermented it comes out at 7.5% ABV & then the distillation process takes place. The distillation process happens twice with the first happening in the wash still & the second distillation is done in the spirit still. In this distillation the spirit rises from 24% to 76% ABV increasing the quality of the spirit. The second distillation process takes a long time & by the time the process is over the spirit is at its perfect ABV. In the maturation process only 1^st & 2^nd fill casks are used. The 1^st filled casks come from ex-bourbon wood from America while the others come from Speyside Cooperage & Craigellachie. They also use Sherry butts & some new French oak barrels, each barrel bringing its own unique flavours & aromas to compliment the whiskey. ...

Every year on Ardbeg day the distillery Ardbeg releases a special edition whisky to commemorate the day. Although this whisky was released in a World Cup year the name & style have nothing to do with this, as the creator Dr Bill Lumsden wanted to create a whisky like a basket of soft fruits hence the green & gold. This whisky is much softer than the popular Alligator, indeed it is softer than many of Ardbeg's whiskies. Ardbeg is situated on the southern edge of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, it has been producing whisky since 1798 though production was halted in 1981. Ardbeg resumed prodcution in 1998 after being bought by Glenmorangie who changed its focus from producing whisky for blends to producing its own unique single malts. Ardbeg Blasda is an experiment from the people of Ardbeg. It got its name from the Galic meaning of the word Blasda, which means Sweet & delicious. Some people say that they are the kings of making peated whisky, so they took it upon themselves to create a whisky that wasn't as peated as their others. The Blasda has a peated level of 8ppm compared to the 10 year old which has a peated level of 50 ppm, ppm stand for phenol in parts per million. They invented this lower peated whisky to attract none peat whisky drinkers to a whole new style of whisky. It is an introduction for them to experience the difference in flavour on a small level, rather than diving right in & drinking a bottle of the ardbeg 10 yo. This was created as a replacement for the much loved 1990 Airigh nam Beist, meaning there is a lot expected from it. It takes its name from a famous whirlpool that lies to the north of Islay, that gets its name from the Viking prince breacan, who perished their proving his love to the daughter of the Lord of the Isles.
