...Yamada Munekis best-selling novel Kiraware Matsuko no Issho was brought to the big screen in 2006 as the acclaimed film Memories of Matsuko starring Nakatani Miki. In the same year, the heartbreaking tale of Kawajiri Matsukos forsaken life also traveled to the small screen for a second round of tragedy in the same-titled TBS drama, this time with Uchiyama Rina ( Good Luck!) in the title role. With greater screen time to work with, the drama explores Matsukos life in greater detail than the film, while offering some add-ons of its own, including changing the nephew to a niece. The drama co-stars Kaname Jun ( Tantei Gakuen Q) & Suzuki Emi ( Yukan Club).
Memories of Matsuko centers on the tragic tale of Kawajiri Matsuko (Uchiyama Rina), a passionate, but pathetic romantic who hopelessly spends her entire life striving for love, only to receive spurn in return. After Matsukos murder, her niece Asuka (Suzuki Emi) begins cleaning out her apartment, giving her a glimpse into the life & mind of this aunt she never knew. Jumping back in time to the 1970s, Matsukos life begins to unfold as she starts work as a odd & jolly junior high school teacher. Her fortunes change, however, when she takes the blame for a crime committed by one of her students. As a result, Matsuko loses her job, her reputation, the regard of her family, & much, much more. Running away from home, Matsuko begins a long downward spiral as she desperately looks for happiness through the unfortunate jobs & many men that enter & exit her life.
