James Joyces Dubliners" is an enthralling collection of modernist short stories which create a vivid picture of the day-to-day experience of Dublin life. This " Penguin Classics" edition

Includes::
notes & an introduction by Terence Brown. Joyces first major work written when he was only twenty-five brought his city to the world for the first time. His stories are rooted in the rich detail of Dublin life portraying ordinary often defeated lives with unflinching realism. From " The Sisters" a vivid portrait of childhood faith & guilt to " Araby" a timeless evocation of the inexplicable yearnings of adolescence to " The Dead" in which Gabriel Conroy is gradually brought to a painful epiphany regarding the nature of his existence Joyce draws a realistic & memorable cast of Dubliners together in an powerful exploration of overarching themes. Writing of social decline sexual desire & exploitation corruption & personal failure he creates a brilliantly compelling unique vision of the world & of human experience. James Joyce (1882-1941) the eldest of ten children was born in Dublin but exiled himself to Paris at twenty as a rebellion against his upbringing. He only returned to Ireland briefly from the continent but Dublin was at heart of his greatest works " Ulysses" & " Finnegans Wake". He lived in poverty until the last ten years of his life & was plagued by near blindness & the grief of his daughters mental illness. If you enjoyed " Dubliners" you might like Joyces " Ulysses" also available in " Penguin Modern Classics". " Joyce redeems his " Dubliners" assures their identity & makes their social existence appear permanent & immortal like the streets they walk". (Tom Paulin). " Joyces early short stories remain undimmed in their brilliance". (" Sunday Times")."

Living overseas but writing always about his native city Joyce made Dublin unforgettable. The stories in Dubliners show us truants seducers gossips rally-drivers generous hostesses corrupt politicians failing priests amateur theologians struggling musicians moony adolescents victims of domestic brutishness sentimental aunts & poets patriots earnest or cynical & people striving to get by. In every sense an international figure Joyce was faithful to his own country by seeing it unflinchingly & challenging every precedent & piety in Irish literature. ...

Snow was general all over Irel&. It was falling on every part of the dark central plain on the treeless hills falling softly upon the Bog of Allen & farther westward softly falling into the dark mutinous Shannon waves. I regret to see that my book has turned out un fiasco solenne James Joyces disillusion with the publication of Dubliners in 1914 was the result of ten years battling with publishers resisting their demands to remove swear words real place names & much else including two entire stories. Although only 24 when he signed his first publishing contract for the book Joyce already knew its worth: to alter it in any way would retard the course of civilisation in Ireland. Joyces aim was to tell the truth
- to create a work of art that would reflect life in Ireland at the turn of the last century & by rejecting euphemism reveal to the Irish the unromantic reality the recognition of which would lead to the spiritual liberation of the country. Each of the fifteen stories offers a glimpse of the lives of ordinary Dubliners
- a death an encounter an opportunity not taken a memory rekindled
- & collectively they paint a portrait of a nation. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford Worlds Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxfords commitment to scholarship providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features including expert introductions by leading authorities helpful notes to clarify the text up-to-date bibliographies for further study & much more.

The year 2011 marked the 25th anniversary of the creation of the first of a now legendary line of Ducati Superbikes with their trademark Desmoquattro 4-valve V-twin motors hung below a lightweight trellis tube frame racebikes that went on to dominate the then new World Superbike Championship for next quarter of a century. Arguably the most significant motorcycle engine design of any kind since the CB750 Honda & surely the most remarkable & successful volume production engine format ever used in world competition by any single manufacturer the venerable Ducati 4-valve desmodromic engine recorded to this date 14 World Superbike Championship titles in the 24 year history of the worlds premier production bike based world roadracing series. A page was also turned in motorcycle history in November 2011 with the debut at the EICMA Motorcycle Show in Milan Italy of the exciting new Ducati 1199 Panigale Superbike powered by the Italian companys all-new Superquadro ultra short-stroke motor. A motor which beyond its overall 90-degree V-twin desmo architecture owed nothing to previous Ducati Superbike engine designs except the promise of continuing a winning tradition. Moreover this Superquadro was fitted in a minimalist monocoque chassis design representing an important departure from previous Ducati V-twin motorcycles which have all employed the companys trademark tubular steel trellis frame. This book chronicles the development & history all five Ducati Corse World Superbike generations together with interviews with the designers racers & team managers. This unique insight is provided by renown motorcycle racer & journalist Alan Cathcart who has had the envious & often exclusive opportunity to test ride every one of the factory Corse race bikes over the last 25 years those tests of which are featured here. Photography of the Corse factory bikes & riders is proved by the worlds most renown motorcycle roadracing photographers. Adding icing to the cake & to warrant this big collectors edition book included are the incredible high definition photographs of the bikes taken by former racer motojournalist & photographer Jim Gianatsis as featured in the Fast Dates World Superbike Calendars from those years with the beautiful Fast Dates Calendar Kittens who served as the official SBK & Team Ducati Corse grid girls at the race where the bikes were photographed. ...

Dubliners

This is the Penguin English Library Edition of Dubliners" by James Joyce. Every night as I gazed up at the window I said softly to myself the word paralysis. It had always sounded strangely in my ears...But now it sounded to me like the name of some maleficent and sinful being. It filled me with fear and yet I longed to be nearer to it and to look upon its deadly work. From a child grappling with the death of a fallen priest to a young womans dilemma over whether to elope to Argentina with her lover to the dance party at which a man discovers just how little he really knows about his wife these fifteen stories bring the gritty realism of existence in Joyces native Dublin to life. With "Dubliners" James Joyce reinvented the art of fiction using a scrupulous deadpan realism to
convey truths that were at once blasphemous and sacramental. "The Penguin English Library" - 100 editions of the best fiction in English from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War."
