The story of the British soldier in the Second World War of endurance through six long years of conflict in theatres as diverse as Europe the Western Desert the Arctic & the Far East has so far not been adequately told. This small book will redress the balance. The book unfolds the story of the road to Dunkirk the development of Fortress Britain & the rearming of the army to open the Second Front in Europe. It explains what it was like to serve in the desert on the long road that led to victory in Alamein & of the battles against the Japanese in the Far East. It does so by reference to the military equipment literature art & ephemera helping to conjure up a flavour of the British Tommys experience that has not been touched upon in other books dealing with the period & assisting the family historian with a greater understanding of the activities of their relatives in this hard-fought war. ...

After WWII the existing railway companies were all put into the control of the newly formed British Transport Commision & that government organisation spawned British Railways which came into being on 1st January 1948. The railway infrastructure had suffered badly during the war years & most of the steam locomotives were 'tired' & badly maintained & or life expired. Although the management of British Railways was already planning to replace steam power with diesel & electric engines/units they still took a decission to build more steam locomotives (as a stop gap). Some 999 (yes just 1 short) Standard locomotives were built in 12 classes ranging from super powerful express & freight engine to suburban tank locomotives. The locomotives were mainly in good order when the order came in 1968 to end steam some only 8 years old. There still exists a fleet of 46 preserved Standards of which 75% are in working order in & around the UKs preserved railways furthermore 3 new build standard locomotives are proposed. Steam fans who were around in the 1960s all remember the ' Standards'. ...

' Pacific' collectively a name applied to steam locomotives with a 4-6-2 wheel arrangement is perhaps more commonly associated with express passenger engines but that is not the whole story there were also Pacific Tank Engines. The LNER is famously associated with their streamlined Gresley A4 Pacific locomotives & that most celebrated of locomotives Flying Scotsman. The new build Pacific Tornado has raised the profile of the 4-6-2 type to even greater heights. The LMS produced powerful Pacific locomotives to a Stanier design; whilst the Southern Railway constructed Bullied air smoothed 4-6-2 engines. The GWR who built Britain's first Pacific type actually entered the BR era without a 4-6-2 type on their stock list! However Riddles included 4-6-2 engines in his multi regional BR Standard range. The locomotive specifications are illustrated & presented in a manner which will appeal equally to enthusiasts model makers & railway historians. ...

Following the success of the first two rebuilt Claughton class engines the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1932 embarked upon a building programme of fifty more Patriot class 5XP locomotives. The new 4-6-0 locomotives were at first referred to as Baby Scots until officially named the Patriot class in 1937. Two batches of the new 3 cylinder engines were built simultaneously forty at Crewe & ten at Derby. In 1948 British Railways took all fifty-two Patriot class engines into stock & subsequently eighteen of the class were rebuilt as 7P locomotives. Although successful in traffic & popular with engine crews & enthusiasts alike no example of these trains survived into preservation. This definitive work looks at the details associated with each member of the class & archive images of all fifty-two locomotives are featured. In addition to looking back this comprehensively researched & highly informative account of the LMS Patriot class also details the plan to build the 53rd member of the class to be known as locomotive No 45551 THE UNKNOWN WARRIOR. ...

This book is a brief but affectionate mainly pictorial panorama of twenty-odd years of the British Touring Car Championship from the anarchical 1960s & early 1970s of flared wheelarches lifting wheels & smoking tyres through the Group 1 years when the rule-makers tried to make the cars look standard & as a result slow them down. This had the classic effect on racecar builders who were not worth their salt unless they could get around the restrictions. The eventual results were faster cars than before which evolved into the tarmac-melting fire-breathing turbo powered front-runners of the late 1980s. The story stops at the point where the rule-makers tried another clampdown as the final decade of the 20th century dawned. ...

British Tanks

In this companion volume to British Tanks: The Second World War Pat Ware provides an expert introduction to the design production and operation of British tanks since 1945. Fewer types of tank were built than during the wartime period but the complexity of design and manufacture increased and a level of technical sophistication in the key areas of armour firepower and mobility was beyond the imaginings of the tank pioneers of the First World War. Using a selection of contemporary photographs - supported by some modern photographs of preserved vehicles - Pat Ware sets the modern tank in a historical context. He describes its origins in Britain and its development and deployment in the Second World War and in the post-war period. All the British tanks that have seen service since the war are
depicted among them the Conqueror Chieftain Centurion and Challenger. The engineers tanks - the flails recovery vehicles bridge-layers - are featured as are the less-well-known British tanks made for export. This highly illustrated survey gives a fascinating insight into the recent evolution of the British tank and its role in the post-war world.
