In the Age of Fighting Sail" (1650-1820) ambitious officers of the navies of many nations sought command of a frigate. Speedy nimble & formidably armed frigates often operated independently unlike the larger ships of the line. Legendary sailors such as Edward Pellew & Charles-Alexandre Leon Durand Comte de Linoise found that commanding such a ship offered numerous opportunities for wealth. In this book four representative frigate duels are examined: first a battle fought between two closely matched ships (HMS Nymphe (36) vs La Cleopatre (32); second a victory won by an inferior British frigate over a superior French frigate (HMS Pallas (32) vs Minerve (40); third a victory
- the only one
- by an inferior French frigate over a superior British frigate (HMS Ambuscade (32) vs Baionnaise (24) & fourth victory of a superior British frigate over an inferior French frigate (HMS Indefatigable (44) of Hornblower fame vs La Virginie (40). Featuring specially commissioned artwork & offering expert analysis this study provides a vivid account of the bloody combats fought by the most romantic warship of the Revolutionary & Napoleonic era
- the frigate."

The idea of a heavy cruiser emerged in the aftermath of World War I & was closely linked to the limits set by the inter-war Washington Naval Treaty. The pre-World War I concept of armoured cruisers had been abandoned but in their stead the Admiralty saw a place for powerful cruisers able to patrol the sea lanes of the British Empire & which were well-armed enough that they could destroy enemy commerce cruisers. The result was a group of British warships known as the Washington Treaty Cruisers that did everything the Admiralty wanted but which conformed to the limits imposed by the treaty. These impressive cruisers were high-sided spacious & stately
- perfect peacetime ambassadors for British power. In war they also packed a considerable punch. During World War II the Royal Navys thirteen heavy cruisers saw service in every theatre of the war whether facing the Bismarck in the North Atlantic or enduring kamikaze attacks in the Pacific.

At different times of the year herring were found in commercial numbers in the North Sea the Moray Firth the Minches the Firth of Clyde the Irish Sea & the English Channel. Because the herring grounds were close to land British fishermen were generally able to land their catches of herrings within hours of catching them. Their French rivals who had to fish further away from their home ports used larger drifters with a crew of up to thirty men (compared to the British drifter with a crew of ten) & they remained at sea for several weeks. As they hauled & emptied their nets they started the salting & barrelling process on board the vessel. On arrival at their home port the herrings were repacked & then marketed. The fact that the British herring were caught gutted properly salted & packed in barrels within twenty-four hours was the reason that Russian & German buyers preferred them. Christopher Unsworth tells the story of this once huge industry & the advent & decline of the steam drifter. ...

In the 1970s the main UK bus groups were the National Bus Company the Scottish Bus Group the Passenger Transport Executives & various council owned concerns. Today we have Stagecoach First & Arriva plus several smaller groups with just a handful of councils still owning bus operations. Throughout these major changes to the bus industry there have been hundreds of smaller independent bus companies running stage carriage services on the roads of the United Kingdom. In this book we look at these from the small operators with just one or two buses to the larger fleets such as Lancashire United. Many independent companies have since the 1970s been swallowed up by larger groups one or two have ceased trading. However many are still thriving & other operators have taken the place of those that we've lost. Deregulation in 1986 brought a host of new bus operators competing for business with the companies that had run their services for many years. Inevitably there were some casualties but today the independent bus sector is alive & well. The purpose of this book is to illustrate the great variety of independent buses that have graced Britain's roads from the early 1970s to the present day. ...
