
The German Commando Special Forces (KSK) officially went into service on 20th September 1996. The task of the KSK, in addition to the execution of long-distance reconnaissance missions & combat behind enemy lines, is defence against terrorist threats within the terms of engagement of the forces & the release of hostages within the framework of evacuation missions. The KSK, which is 1000 soldiers strong, comprises four commando companies & one long-distance reconnaissance company. After missions to capture war criminals in Bosnia & Kosovo, there were latterly over 100 KSK troops involved in seeking out Al' Qaida terrorists in Afghanistan.
