Developed initially as a Strategic Long-Range Bomber, the Tu-95 was one of the most unique military aircraft. The Tu-95 R Ts (NATO designation " Bear" D) variant was developed for the Soviet Navy between 1959 & 1962 for use in the roles of electronic reconnaissance & target tracking of aircraft, surface ships & submarines. Mass production began in 1963 & from 1966 onwards the aircraft
- in co-operation with Soviet submarines
- were an integral part of the Navy's Inter-Continental Missile Attack System. Regular flights over the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans enabled an almost continuous surveillance & tracking of NATO Maritime Units as well as the ships of other Navy's. For over three decades the Tu-95 R Ts was an Icon of the " Cold War" due to its frequent presence within the vicinity of NATO Maritime Units. In 1990 the Naval Airborne Forces of the Soviet Union had over 37 Tu-95 R Ts' available.
