This batch of the Balvenie Tun 1401 series is number 4. It comes from vatting 7 American Oak casks plus 3 European oak Sherry casks. One of only 2500 bottles, these are becoming harder & harder to find. Nose: Dried orange, orange oil, orange peel, dry European oak, complex spice, antique polished mahogany, shoe polish, beeswax, crystallised honey. Perfect balance. palate: Huge orange, intense European oak, intense spice, ginger & white pepper, lovely floral notes, orange blossom, orange oil, liquid candle wax, dried flowers, homemade paper. Very complex. Finish: Continues the orange theme, the oak recedes & the oily orange stays & stays. Beautiful. ...

Balvenie's 1401 Batch 5 is a blend of five sherry casks & four bourbon, married together for three months in Tun 1401 & bottled at cask-strength. Nose: Polished leather, wood varnish, menthol & tobacco leaves. Shows some lighter touches a little later on, with fresh apples, orange juice, as well as some floral touches, accompanied by honey. The balance is incredible. Taste: Lovely citrus fruits. Oranges, lemons & pink grapefruit, but also varnish, leather & menthol, with a whiff of smoke. Some notes of cinnamon, as well as a gentle peppery edge. Theres honey here too, & the oak is undeniable. Finish: Spicy & oaky notes at first, but then lingers on fruits for a long time. ...

Batch 7 of Balvenie's Tun 1401 series. Named after David Stewart's favourite marrying vat, this was a vatting of nine American oak Bourbon casks & two European oak ex-sherry casks. This was a duty free only release which came to market in March 2013. Nose: Old school, beautiful apple / malt bomb first in the nose, a little alcohol but in the frame, pear is also to light honey pleasant, touch of sea air, a little candle wax, some green tea & instead of red now green apple, a little lemon Taste: Beautiful fruity onset, lots of apple, red, sweet, slightly candied apple, lots of honey sweetness, nice full in the mouth, citrus notes also, lemon ice cream, a hint of salt as well, in the background a touch of dry bread or autumn leaves, a little bit of malt, lavender little & the green tea at the back, but without the dryness, rather sour, stinging nettle, with more sips salt is getting even more of the acid just Finish: Incredibly nice & smooth finish of leather & tobacco. The follow-up to the distillery's incredibly popular Tun 1401 series, Tun 1509 is made with a bigger marrying tun & continues to be absolutely fantastic. For the second batch, they used 32 casks
- 23 American oak casks & 9 European oak Sherry casks, & allowed to marry for a few months before being bottled at 50.3% ABV. 8500 bottles were produced in total. Nose: Luscious with aromas of honey, orange peel, sweet oak vanilla & delicate ginger spiciness. Palate: Richly sweet, combining elegant honey with tangy citrus & gentle vanilla. Subtle notes of cinnamon, ginger & nutmeg. Finish: Smooth finish with lingering spice & citrus elements.

Balvenie tun 1509 is David Stewart's new & larger plaything following the success of marrying tun 1401. The 1509 is now providing its third release! For this batch 3 he selected 12 Sherry butts with vintages varying from 1989 to 1992, 11 American oak hogsheads filled in 1989 & 8 refill American oak butts from 1992 & 1993. These were married for several months. Included with this bottle is a sheet with graphical representations of the flavour profile of the whisky from each of 31 casks used! Nose: fine aromas of wood, dried fruits & spiciness of cinnamon & ginger Palate: sweet, elegant honey notes merge with mellow vanilla & intensive wooden, spicy notes as well as the aroma of dark fruits & sherry.
