Batch 7 of Balvenie's Tun 1401 series. Named after David Stewart's favourite marrying vat, this was a vatting of nine American oak Bourbon casks & two European oak ex-sherry casks. This was a duty free only release which came to market in March 2013. Nose: Old school, beautiful apple / malt bomb first in the nose, a little alcohol but in the frame, pear is also to light honey pleasant, touch of sea air, a little candle wax, some green tea & instead of red now green apple, a little lemon Taste: Beautiful fruity onset, lots of apple, red, sweet, slightly candied apple, lots of honey sweetness, nice full in the mouth, citrus notes also, lemon ice cream, a hint of salt as well, in the background a touch of dry bread or autumn leaves, a little bit of malt, lavender little & the green tea at the back, but without the dryness, rather sour, stinging nettle, with more sips salt is getting even more of the acid just Finish: Incredibly nice & smooth finish of leather & tobacco. For this batch 3 he selected 12 Sherry butts with vintages varying from 1989 to 1992, 11 American oak hogsheads filled in 1989 & 8 refill American oak butts from 1992 & 1993. Balvenie Tun 1509 is the follow-up of the distillerys success story Balvenie Tun 1401 which was released in nine batches between 2010 & early 2014. To create the first batch of Tun 1509, David Stewart, Malt Master at Balvenie carefully selected 42 of the finest casks 35 traditional American oak barrels & seven European oak sherry butts from the distillery's precious aged stocks. All were transferred to Tun 1509, which sits in Warehouse 24, for several months before bottling in a rare interpretation of the marrying process. All 42 casks come together to create a unique expression of The Balvenie thats greater than the sum of its constituent parts. Nose: honeyed, with elegant fruity notes. Oranges, apricot jam, some yellow raisins. A little unripe mango. Soft beeswax. Underneath is a subtle resin note, citrus blossom & old oak. Something vaguely earthy. Gentle but still in line with Tun 1401. Palate: orange peel at first, then nutmeg & a clear oaky side. Warming cedar oak & tobacco leaves. Soft pepper, ginger & clove. Just enough grapefruit to make it brighter again, but on the whole it feels a little thin & (bourbon-y) oaky. Finish: long, with a subtle bitterness of rhubarb & orange peel.
