The Miyagikyo distillery was built in 1969 as a counterpart to the Yoichi distillery. Miyagikyo produces fruity & delicate malts. As with all of Nikka's whiskies, balance & complexity are sought in the production. Nose: Japanese plum, peat, honey, soft fragrant incense smoke, lavender oil. Light & fragrant like perfume. Reminds me a lot of Suntory Hibiki. Alcohol is detectable if one delves a little too far, which is not something I usually detect. Also picking up something quite distinctive that Ive only got with Japanese malts so far
- an almost indescribable note that I can presently only describe as oak that has been steeped in water with violets & other floral-perfumed extracts & then dried. With water: Fruity sherry, floral notes emerge but leave the other notes by the wayside. Palate: Immediately prickly & spicy, clings to the tongue delivering a big hit of spiced fruit & citrus oils with a good helping of brine. This is a robust dram. Im surprised in fact, the strength in delivery seems greater than the bottled strength of 45%. With water: Delivery tones down to an acceptable level, oak & white pepper coming through at the expense of citrus & losing some of the mouthfeel. Finish: Immediate bitter citrus upon swallowing, followed by fruit & development into an unexpectedly big phenolic peaty punch that builds & builds
- & then a reprieve; slowly trails off over a couple of minutes supported by continuing background threads of fruit & wood spice leading to a dry conclusion. With water: Shorter & toned down in all departments.

Built in 1969, the location of the Miyagikyo Distillery was selected because of its clean air, just the right humidity for storage, & abundant underground water filtered through a layer of peat. In Yoichi, Masataka Taketsuru saw numerous reminders of Scotl&, & this convinced him that this should be the home of Japanese Whisky. The Miyagikyo Distillery is also in northern Japan, in Sendai Miyagi Prefecture, northern Honshu. Travelling in the area one day, Masataka came upon this site completely enclosed by mountains & sandwiched between two rivers. He immediately knew that this was the perfect site for whisky distilling. Sendai's fresh water, suitable humidity & crisp air produce soft & mild malt. This expression will not disappoint, but sadly now discontinued! No box. Nose: Sweet caramel & fruits, oranges & mango. With time a lemon note develops, & some flowers. Later on, white chocolate & rosemarine. Palate: A full body & a sweet taste, with a slight woody bitterness. General tropical fruits, & aromatic herbs. Finish: The finish is of medium length, & very sweet. Sherry all the way! ...

Monkey Shoulder is a Scotch whisky blended from three of Speyside's finest single malts (Balvenie, Glenfiddich & Kininvie) using batches of just 27 casks for a smoother, richer taste. Nose: An elegant, stylish nose of marmalade, cocoa & malt. Plenty of vanilla & a sprinkling of winter spice (nutmeg, cloves & cinnamon) alongside a mouth-watering hint of aniseed. Palate: Very malty, creamy delivery with a suggestion of berry fruit. Juicy toasted barley, cloves & butterscotch. Manuka honey, hot-buttered-toast & dried apricot develop. Finish: Medium length, spicy oak & a hint of peppermint on the tail. Overall: According to the Monkey Shoulder website: Some say it tastes just like riding bareback on the wild moors of Scotland with a flame haired maiden on Christmas morning. Others agree it tastes like 007 wearing a tuxedo wetsuit. This is whisky to be enjoyed. ...
