The first release from Adelphi's Ardnamurchan distillery. The spirit 2016 is a combination of peated & unpeated spirit, this was matured for the final three months in Pedro Ximnez sherry butts. The bottle is marked with a series of notes: Concerto Barley, Broomhall Farm, Glenmore Spring, Long Fermentation, Slow Distillation, Oloroso PX. It has been labelled as a 'spirit' instead of 'whisky' as the first release is merely 18 months young. Nose: The nose is filled with notes of apple, sweet raisins & lightly herbaceous, there are remnants of dry grass & soil & it is rather quite earthy. Over time, the nose also offers a touch of cinnamon, complementing its herbaceous & earthy notes. Palate: The palate is soft, tannic with loads of berries, citrus & is quite sweet & fruity. The citrus continues with hints of orange peel, lemon meringue before being topped by a light layering of peat smoke & remnants of clove spice. Finish: The finish is medium to long, soft & tannic & there is a bit of heat on the finish. ...
The Ardnamurchan distillery hasn't yet released any whisky, but their bottlings of malt spirit which aren't quite old enough to be labelled as whisky have been incredibly popular indeed! Ardnamurchan Spirit 2017 AD is made using a combination of both peated & unpeated spirit aged in Sherry casks. Both the sweet & peaty notes are punchy indeed - we're excited to see what is coming next...... NOSE: Remarkable colour. Big & smoky with woodsmoke to the fore, then an aroma of freshly-felled timber & a surprising whiff of artichoke. As it develops, it morphs into agave: dusty, horse sweat, lumberyard, creosote a quality which is accentuated with water. PALATE: More oak &, while sweet (pear), is obviously young. The roasted note once again hitches it to the pommel of mezcal, as does the hickory smoke. A lightly bittersweet syrup element & coal tar. Water shows it to be thick, rich & fruity (once the smoke calms itself down). FINISH: Bold & smoked. ...
