Mathematics (Mechanics) A  Level About A  Levels A levels are subject-specific qualifications normally studied after GCSEs or International GCSEs, though they are appropriate at any age to gain a qualification in a subject in which you are interested. The qualification is made up of two levels: the AS level & the A2 level. The AS level is the first half of a full A level & is a qualification on its own. The A2 level builds on the knowledge gained from both the AS level, as well as the GCSE level. Both the AS & A2 levels & examinations must be successfully completed to gain a full A level. Students usually take 1 year to complete the AS & a further year to complete the A2
- so a full A level usually takes two years. This fast track A level, however, lets you complete the course in half the time (i.e. one year instead of two years). The fast track A level works in exactly the same way & you get the same certificate as you would on the two-year course. A levels are highly valued by schools, colleges & employers. They are at level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework & they carry UCAS points, which will be awarded according to the grade achieved (A = 120, B = 100, C = 80). Many courses at university or college will require you to take A levels in certain subjects. We recommend you check the requirements for those courses & take the appropriate subject A levels. About Our A Level Maths Course By the end of your course, you will be able to work with complex functions & understand how to calculate forces in mechanics. You will cover topics such as geometry, calculus, trigonometry & algebra & gain the ability to manipulate figures, & use abstract reasoning & logic in problem solving. Format of Course There are many modules that make up A level Mathematics. We offer the main modules as follows: Core 1 Core 2 Mechanics 1 Core 3 Core 4 Mechanics 2 The first three modules constitute AS Level & the later three modules are A2 Level. Each module is presented separately. The content of the modules have references to Edexcel Modular Mathematics textbooks, which will need to be purchased in conjunction with the course. The course builds up understanding of key mathematical concepts gradually & sequentially. Topics such as differentiation & integration are covered in all the Core modules & form part of the essential mathematical toolkit needed for higher study. For each module there are two or three formal tutor-marked assessments which, when completed, should be sent to your tutor, via e-mail or conventional post. All of the information within the units is written in line with the requirements of the Edexcel examination board

Specification & the demands of the examination. All units are broken down into clear subject topics, & students should spend the amount of time studying for each topic as advised by their course tutor. Each topic module has been written for ease of understanding & topic coverage may be of different length & difficulty depending on the level of detail & information required. You will need to study the modules in the sequence provided. The AS & A2 modules link together & assessment is all done by examination as there is no coursework option. Mathematics has a distinct vocabulary, notation & terminology all of its own – for many mathematics is a language. You are expected not only to recognise & understand notation & vocabulary in examination papers, but use them correctly in your answers. If you have problems remembering these it is a good idea to write them on index cards or to develop a file of key words as you go along in order to help you learn them. What Can I Do After Completing This A Level in Mathematics? Getting A levels can provide you with a variety of options, such as work, further study or an apprenticeship. After successful completion of this course, you could apply to university, a BTEC Higher National, NVQ, a BTEC Apprenticeship or a mixture of these qualifications. If you are applying to a UK university you are likely to apply through the University & College Admission Service (UCAS).
