Logistics Course In this course we examine logistics. Logistics is concerned with managing the flow of materials through an organisation to the customer. It is concerned with making things happen. It organises inputs (receipts from suppliers), supplies the transformation process (work in progress) & is finally responsible for delivering the output (finished goods) to the customer. Increasingly, organisations are looking at their products or services as part of a chain or network. They are looking at what they produce & trying to optimise the value of all the inputs from all sources - that is, all the suppliers in the chain of supply. This is called supply chain management. This closer linking between customer & supplier organisations obviously needs much closer integration, & organisations are sharing much more information to achieve this. This involves utilising information technology for sharing data about stock levels, demand & trends. These initiatives use technology such as EPOS (electronic point of sale equipment), EDI (electronic data interchange), scanning & bar-coding. After participating in this course, you should be able to: define logistics explain how logistics works in a factory, from goods in to distribution out identify the problems involved in stock holding & control understand just-in-time (JIT) approaches understand the role played by distribution identify key performance measures & the role of benchmarking in logistics appreciate that logistics strategy is linked to an organisation's corporate strategy. ...

Labour Market & Human Resource Planning Course The exchange of work for payment is a practice as old as human civilisation & as modern as today's newspaper. We hear of "fat cats" earning too much & we hear of junior hospital doctors enduring the stress of working too much & earning too little. We hear much less about the mechanisms whereby the people looking for work & employers looking for people to do work actually get together. These mechanisms are the mechanisms of the labour market, as everyone who exchanges their work for someone else's payment is part of a labour market. Matching supply with demand is an activity involving careers advisors, recruitment consultants, job centres & other agencies before it becomes one of the central features of human resource management. Economists explain the way supply & demand works between those who offer employment & those who offer their labour, with the emphasis on the economic aspects of the options open to the parties: " Theory suggests that job choice is determined by the bundle of wage & non-wage conditions attached to different jobs. Current earnings, employment prospects, probable future earnings, the nature & conditions of work & similar factors are all evaluated by the person seeking work, whose ultimate decision between alternative job openings depends on the balance of net advantages" (Mackay et al. 1971, p. 16). Here we limit ourselves to those features of labour market data & analysis that impinge on the vacancy filling problems of organisations. ...

Law A  Level About A  Levels A levels are subject-specific qualifications normally studied after GCSEs or International GCSEs, though they are appropriate at any age to gain a qualification in a subject in which you are interested. The qualification is made up of two levels: the AS level & the A2 level. The AS level is the first half of a full A level & is a qualification on its own. The A2 level builds on the knowledge gained from both the AS level, as well as the GCSE level. Both the AS & A2 levels & examinations must be successfully completed to gain a full A level. Students usually take 1 year to complete the AS & a further year to complete the A2
- so a full A level usually takes two years. This fast track A level, however, lets you complete the course in half the time (i.e. one year instead of two years). The fast track A level works in exactly the same way & you get the same certificate as you would on the two-year course. A levels are highly valued by schools, colleges & employers. They are at level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework & they carry UCAS points, which will be awarded according to the grade achieved (A = 120, B = 100, C = 80). Many courses at university or college will require you to take A levels in certain subjects. We recommend you check the requirements for those courses & take the appropriate subject A levels. About Our A Level Law Studies Course Law is both a fascinating & challenging subject. It affects every aspect of our daily lives. It is an ideal subject for someone with a logical mind, who likes research & attention to detail. AS/A2 Law generally is a very popular subject with both sixth form students who may be considering a career in law, & also with more mature students who want to find out more about this intriguing subject. Leaders, Leading & the Led Course In this course, we examine leadership in organisations. We first of all highlight that leadership is one of the key managerial roles & assert the importance to organisations of effective leadership. Leadership skills & the sources of a leader's power are then explored & we make clear that formal management position is just one of these. The sources of a leader's power are, in fact, broken down into personal power sources & organisational power sources, & to help clarify this distinction, we discuss the notions of transactional leadership & transformational leadership. Finally, we present & evaluate two important approaches to leadership effectiveness: the universal traits approach & the situation-contingent traits approach. In terms of the latter, we give an appreciation of Fiedler's extensive work in this area. By the end of the session, you should be able to: define the basic process of leadership. understand the relationship between leadership & management. explain key leadership skills. identify the sources of a leader's power. distinguish between transactional & transformational leaders. appreciate the universal personality traits approach to leadership. appreciate the situation-contingent personality traits approach to leadership. ...
