FROM THE 1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE ESSEX SERPENT`A beautiful, devastating, brilliant book` Marian Keyes` Astonishingly dark, rich storytelling, exquisitely balanced between gothic shocks & emotional truth` Francis Spufford` Mythic, ominous & sensitively human, Melmoth is haunting in all the best ways` Frances Hardinge Twenty years ago Helen Franklin did something she cannot forgive herself for, & she has spent every day since barricading herself against its memory. But her sheltered life is about to change.A strange manuscript has come into her possession. It is filled with testimonies from the darkest chapters of human history, which all record sightings of a tall, silent woman in black, with unblinking eyes & bleeding feet: Melmoth, the loneliest being in the world. Condemned to walk the Earth forever, she tries to beguile the guilty & lure them away for a lifetime wandering alongside her. Everyone that Melmoth seeks out must make a choice: to live with what they`ve done, or be led into the darkness. Helen can`t stop reading, or shake the feeling that someone is watching her. As her past finally catches up with her, she too must choose which path to take. Exquisitely written, & gripping until the very last page, this is a masterpiece of moral complexity, asking us profound questions about mercy, redemption, & how to make the best of our conflicted world. ...

The 1:50 000 topographic map gives a more general picture of the ground features than a basic map. It shows settlements, houses, roads, cultivated areas, waterways, cutting areas, mires, rock exposures, & relief. One map sheet covers an area of 30 x 40 km & one centimetre corresponds to 500 metres on the ground. The 1:50, 000 topographic map is also an ideal complement to nautical charts as it provides useful information about the land areas adjacent to waterways. For example, all Finnish sea areas are covered by 1:50 000 topographic map sheets. ...

Tibetans have experienced waves of genocide since the 1950s. Now they are facing ecocide. The Himalayan snowcaps are in meltdown mode, due to climate change
- accelerated by a rain of black soot from massive burning of coal & other fuels in both China & India. The mighty rivers of Tibet are being dammed by Chinese engineering consortiums to feed the mainland`s thirst for power, & the land is being relentlessly mined in search of minerals to feed China`s industrial complex. On the drawing board are plans for a massive engineering project to divert water from Eastern Tibet to water-starved Northern China. Ruthless Chinese repression leaves Tibetans powerless to stop the reckless destruction of their sacred l&, but they are not the only victims of this campaign: the nations downstream from Tibet rely heavily on rivers sourced in Tibet for water supply, & for rich silt used in agriculture. This ecocide has been happening with little scrutiny until now. Meltdown in Tibet turns the spotlight on the darkest side of China`s emergence as a global super power.

Melton Constable & Briston in 1904 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Coverage stretches from Melton Constable station eastward to Hall Farm, Briston. Melton Constable, a village with just 118 people in 1881, became a railway `town` when the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway opened their works here; the population then rose to 1, 157 by 1911. The map shows that Locomotive Works (the full track layout is given) & the handful of streets that were built next to it for workers. Burgh Hall & the remains of St Mary`s church are also shown. The map continues eastward & on the right side of the map is much of Briston, including Manor Farm, Horseshoe Common, All Saints church, Church Street, etc. The directory describes Briston as a `small town` but it appears more of a village here. Directories for both Briston & Melton Constable are included. About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25” OS Series: Selected towns in Great Britain & Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th & early 20th century. Melnitz

”1871. Cattle-dealer Solomon Meijer has made a reputation for himself as one of the few honest Jews in Endingen, a rare Swiss town in which Jews are allowed to reside. He leads a largely untroubled life, rewarded by his work and comforted at home by his wife and two daughters. But all of this is set to end when he answers a knock at the door in the middle of the night. On the doorstep stands his young distant cousin, Janki, half-dead and begging for refuge. The pitiful figure is invited in and given a coveted place in the bosom of the family, but when Janki recovers and regains his ambition and his fine-looks, he will change the Meijer family`s lives for generations to come...In the tradition of the great family romances of the nineteenth century, Melnitz is the saga of the
Swiss-Jewish Meijer family, spanning five generations from the Franco-Prussian War to World War II. It is a novel of fate, fortune and great falls; a homage to the sunken world of yiddish culture and a celebration of the enduring spirit of biting Jewish humour.”
