” Tribes of the Great Rift Valley” is a celebration & photographic study of the traditional peoples who occupy the tiny, remote villages scattered across the deserts, plains, hills & forests of the Great Rift Valley. From the red-ochre-painted warriors of Samburu to the Mursi with their jutting lip-plates to the guinea-fowl-painted faces of the Karo, the people of the Rift Valley remain among the most untouched & unchanged on the planet. This gorgeously illustrated book provides sweeping views of this wild landscape & its people, from the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Eritrea, across the Ethiopian highlands, & down to the great lakes & primordial forests of Kenya, Tanzania & Malawi. These fascinating cultures are remarkably diverse, yet nearly all of their communities & traditions face extinction due to Western influence. For the people of the Rift Valley, this book serves as a historic record of the living traditions they have carried with them into the twenty-first century. For those outside of Africa`s borders, it serves as a family reunion, bringing the viewer into the world of their lost African relatives. This journey into the heart of Africa is designed to be a broad profile of tribal humanity to which every reader has a connection & provides a lasting record, perhaps even the last record, of a quickly disappearing way of life. ...

Falk, one of Germany`s leading publishers of street plans, produce their town plans in two different formats. Falk Extra plans are folded in a standard way, where the whole map can be opened to view the entire area it covers. For larger cities, the same mapping is also published with a special folding system designed to show only a small section of the map at one time. The whole map can be opened but it will be cut in several places. Many find these street plans very user-friendly & easier to handle than conventional maps. The plans, which cover towns with their outer suburbs, indicate main landmarks & public buildings & show all the public transport facilities, one way streets & car parks. Plans of lager cities include a separate map of the town centre at a more detailed scale & a diagram of the underground & the suburban rail network. The plans also show the postal divisions & have an extensive street index which, where appropriate, shows individual postal codes for each street. Map legend

Neil Kent`s portrait of Trieste fills a major gap in contemporary writing on Italy, an important task bearing in mind that the city is now one of Western Europe`s major gateways to the Balkans. It focuses in particular on the last two centuries: first, on the post-Napoleonic period-its heyday- when Trieste emerged as the otherwise landlocked Habsburg Empire`s gateway to the Adriatic, a rich & thriving city of numerous ethnic & religious groups; then on the period of decline after the First World War, when Italian irredentists longing to recover Dalmatia radiated out from the city; & next on the decades of the Cold War, when Trieste became a marginalized border town, with its link to the Balkans virtually blocked off. Finally the book moves into the contemporary period, when the political & economic reorganisation of the Balkans has made Trieste south-eastern Europe`s gateway to western Europe. While political, economic & social issues form the primary focus, art, literature & architecture, natural geography & aspects relating to health & hygiene are also examined. ...
