Now available in paperback, ” Tribe” tells the story of Bruce Parry`s time spent understanding 15 remote native tribes around the world, a remarkable journey that became a successful BBC series. Over several years, Parry spent a month living with 15 different tribes in remote regions of the world. The result is an insight into wildly differing cultures that are vibrant, hospitable & full of spirit despite numerous hardships. Parry`s insatiable curiosity takes him deep into the heart of each community, whether they be forest people, cannibals or nomadic herders, where beyond the obvious differences, he finds the same loves, trials & issues we have the world over. His encounters also throw up some thought-provoking & challenging questions: is change good? Should we protect tribes people? &, more importantly, who are we to impose our own cultural sensitivities in our judgement of their customs? Along the way, Parry takes part in some ridiculously dangerous rituals, which include taking mammoth amounts of a potentially lethal hallucinogen, having his penis forced back into his body & eating rats` livers cake. He also forges new friendships that will last him a lifetime. ...

From the author of THE PERFECT STORM & WAR comes a book about why men miss war, why Londoners missed the Blitz, & what we can all learn from American Indian captives who refused to go home. Tribe is a look at post-traumatic stress disorder & the challenges veterans face returning to society. Using his background in anthropology, Sebastian Junger argues that the problem lies not with vets or with the trauma they`ve suffered, but with the society to which they are trying to return. One of the most puzzling things about veterans who experience PTSD is that the majority never even saw combat-and yet they feel deeply alienated & out of place back home. The reason may lie in our natural inclination, as a species, to live in groups of thirty to fifty people who are entirely reliant on one another for safety, comfort & a sense of meaning: in short, the life of a soldier. It is one of the ironies of the modern age that as affluence rises in a society, so do rates of suicide, depression & of course PTSD. In a wealthy society people don`t need to cooperate with one another, so they often lead much lonelier lives that lead to psychological distress. There is a way for modern society to reverse this trend, however, & studying how veterans react to coming home may provide a clue to how to do it. But it won`t be easy. ...

” Tribes of the Great Rift Valley” is a celebration & photographic study of the traditional peoples who occupy the tiny, remote villages scattered across the deserts, plains, hills & forests of the Great Rift Valley. From the red-ochre-painted warriors of Samburu to the Mursi with their jutting lip-plates to the guinea-fowl-painted faces of the Karo, the people of the Rift Valley remain among the most untouched & unchanged on the planet. This gorgeously illustrated book provides sweeping views of this wild landscape & its people, from the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Eritrea, across the Ethiopian highlands, & down to the great lakes & primordial forests of Kenya, Tanzania & Malawi. These fascinating cultures are remarkably diverse, yet nearly all of their communities & traditions face extinction due to Western influence. For the people of the Rift Valley, this book serves as a historic record of the living traditions they have carried with them into the twenty-first century. For those outside of Africa`s borders, it serves as a family reunion, bringing the viewer into the world of their lost African relatives. This journey into the heart of Africa is designed to be a broad profile of tribal humanity to which every reader has a connection & provides a lasting record, perhaps even the last record, of a quickly disappearing way of life. ...

Falk, one of Germany`s leading publishers of street plans, produce their town plans in two different formats. Falk Extra plans are folded in a standard way, where the whole map can be opened to view the entire area it covers. For larger cities, the same mapping is also published with a special folding system designed to show only a small section of the map at one time. The whole map can be opened but it will be cut in several places. Many find these street plans very user-friendly & easier to handle than conventional maps. The plans, which cover towns with their outer suburbs, indicate main landmarks & public buildings & show all the public transport facilities, one way streets & car parks. Plans of lager cities include a separate map of the town centre at a more detailed scale & a diagram of the underground & the suburban rail network. The plans also show the postal divisions & have an extensive street index which, where appropriate, shows individual postal codes for each street. Map legend

The other, Mario, is his four-year-old grandson who has barely learned to talk but has a few tricks up his loose-fitting sleeves all the same. The older combatant has lived for years in almost complete solitude. The younger one has been dumped with a grandfather he barely knows for 72 hours.
