The maps have contours at 20m intervals, enhanced by relief shading, plus colouring and/or graphics to show different types of terrain, vegetation or land use. Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale: detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). The MTN50 series was begun in late 1990s. Each map covers 28.5x 18.5 km (with adjustments in the coastal areas). The map covers the northern part of Llwynypia, & stretches from Llwynypia Colliery (at the foot of the map) northward to Tyntyla Isolation Hospital & north-east to St David`s church, Tylorstown. Features include most of Llwynypia Colliery with railway lines, stretch of Taff Vale Rhondda-Fawr Branch, Llwynypia Homes, old levels & quarries, Ystrad Gas Works, western edge of Pont-y-gwaith (Deri Street), soap & candle works, tramways, Rhondda River, etc. On the reverse are directories of Llwynypia, Tylorstown & Pontygwaith in 1906. The London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) claimed to be the largest private enterprise concern in the British Empire. It was Britain`s largest steam railway & the only one to operate in Engl&, Scotl&, Wales & Northern Irel&, as well as having two short stretches of line in the Irish Republic. It was the world`s largest owner of railway hotels & the world`s largest railway shipping operator. Mainly a steam railway, it had a significant electric service out of Euston in London, & on Merseyside & Manchester. As the subject is probed more deeply, the beginner will soon feel the need for guidance in how to conduct local historical research.
