Highgate retains its village atmosphere & magnificent views across London. The author relates its history from wealthy Tudor residents through to the expansive Victorian times when Highgate was fortunate to obtain much public green space, & into modern times. It also acquired a cable tramway up its steep hill, a famous school founded in 1565 & one of the most picturesque cemeteries in the country.
