As the Soviet Union struggled along the path to Communism, food supplies were often sporadic & shortages commonplace. Day to day living was hard, both the authorities & their citizens had to apply every ounce of ingenuity to maximize often inadequate resources. This book contains over 60 recipes, each introduced with an insightful historical story or anecdote, & an accompanying image, spanning such delicacies as aspic, borscht, caviar & herring, by way of bird’s milk cake & pelmeni. The stories & recipes contained here reflect these turbulent times: from basic subsistence meals consumed by the average citizen (okroshka), to extravagant banquets held by the political elite (suckling pig with buckwheat), & a scattering of classics (beef stroganoff) in between. Illustrated using images sourced from original Soviet recipe books collected by the author. Many of these sometimes extraordinary-looking pictures depicted dishes whose recipes used unobtainable ingredients, placing them firmly in the realm of ‘aspirational’ fantasy for the average Soviet household. From the imposition of communist rule in 1945, Ceausescu`s secret police, the Securitate, remained shrouded in secrecy. This work benefits from access to the archives of the Securitate. The author draws on the memoirs, published & unpublished, of victims of the 1950s terror & on his own interviews with prominent dissidents. The result is a ”dual” history: that of the oppressor (the Securitate) & of the oppressed (the Romanian people) during Ceausescu`s years in power. The work also contains a documentary appendix of translations of Securitate documents & dissident literature, some of which has not yet been made public in Romania itself. The study deals fully with the methods & tactics used by Ceausescu in maintaining oppression, & draws on the testimony of many of his victims. It also analyzes: the means by which communist rule was imposed on the country; the measures taken to revolutionize Romanian society; the dictator`s persecution of minorities; the role of intellectuals & the Orthodox Church; the policy of ”systematization”, or demolition of villages; & the dictator`s courting of the West in the 1970s & 1980s. ...

Topographic coverage of mainland Spain at 1:50, 000 in the MTN50 (Mapa Topográfico Nacional) series from the Centro Nacional de Información Geografica, the country’s civilian survey organization. The maps have contours at 20m intervals, enhanced by relief shading, plus colouring and/or graphics to show different types of terrain, vegetation or land use. Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale, detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). Each map covers 29.5x 18.5 km (with adjustments in the border or coastal areas). The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus margin ticks for latitude & longitude at 1` intervals. - MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.
