One of several maps & panoramas of London to come out in 1851, the year of the Great Exhibition. This is an aerial panorama, naming streets & showing many individual buildings. The view is looking southwards & therefore appears ”upside-down” compared to most maps. The enormous glass building built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition is shown
- Cockneys dubbed it the ” Crystal Palace” & it`s even named as such on the panorama. The map is an exhilarating view of London looking south over the River Thames, as if taken from a balloon over Hampstead. This plan/view`s extent (St John`s Wood
- Battersea Park
- De Beauvoir Town
- Greenwich) & large size makes for a superbly detailed image with innumerable streets, buildings & landmarks identifiable. First published on the opening day of the Great Exhibition, the plan proved immensely popular with reissues appearing into the late 1870s. This is an early Stanford edition with the aquatint detail fresh & distinct, & presents a wonderful picture of London prior to the great Victorian expansion.

5 Balloonomania Belles reveals the astonishing stories of the fabulous female pioneers of balloon flight. More than a century before the first aeroplane women were heading for the heavens in crazy, inspired contraptions that could bring death or glory & all too often, both. Award-winning journalist Sharon Wright reveals their hair-raising adventures in a book that brings the stories of the feisty female ballooning heroines together for the first time. Women were in the vanguard of the Balloonomania craze that took hold in the eighteenth & nineteenth centuries & swept across Europe then the world. Their exploits were a vital element of our first voyages into the sky. When womens options were often severely limited by law & convention they managed to join the exhilarating quest for spectacle, adventure & danger among the clouds. Many of the brightest stars of this extraordinary era of human flight were women. From the perilous ascent in 1784 by feisty French teenager Elisabeth Thible, female aeronauts have never looked back or down. Who were these brave women who took to the air when it was such an incredibly dangerous & scandalous thing to dosharon Wright brings together in one book the show-stopping stories of the very first flying women. ...

- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.
