North Hertford in 1897 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. The map covers the north of this ancient county town &, in particular, the Bengeo Ward, Bengeo Urban, Town Ward & St. John Urban districts of the town. Stant Farm above the G.E.R. railway shows the county’s agricultural importance, but it is industry which dominates this map with gravel pits, many mills & malthouses; the waterworks & the workhouse as well as the heavy build up of housing in the south of the map indicate the towns reliance on these industries. Feature include St. Mary`s Priory, St. John`s Church, Christ`s Hospital, many other parishes, chapels, rectories, & mission halls, Revel`s hall, Bengeo hall, Bengeo Cottage, Mole Wood`s, etc. On the reverse is the history of the town as well as a census private & commercial residents & businesses in its northern part.
