OS Explorer map 462 covers the Orkney Islands of Hoy, plus part of the Mainland & a number of smaller islands, mostly uninhabited. Noy is much higher than the other Orkney islands. Ward Hill is 481m, while the cliffs at St John's Head are up to 350m. The area is very important for some specials of seabird & is an RSPB reserve. It is also designated as an National Scenic Area. The Orkney Islands are well knows for their archaeological interest, with finds & ruins from the Neolithic to 18th Century. These maps are the ' Outline' versions that show contour lines & features in h&-drawn black & white, & show many of the map symbols that we are familiar with today.
