OS Explorer map 462 covers the Orkney Islands of Hoy, plus part of the Mainland & a number of smaller islands, mostly uninhabited. Noy is much higher than the other Orkney islands. Ward Hill is 481m, while the cliffs at St John's Head are up to 350m. The area is very important for some specials of seabird & is an RSPB reserve. It is also designated as an National Scenic Area. The Orkney Islands are well knows for their archaeological interest, with finds & ruins from the Neolithic to 18th Century. Scapa Flow, the waters south of Orkney Mainl&, have been used as a shelter for ships since the Vikings, althogh it was closed as a Royal Navy base shortly after the end of World War 2.
