Longside Airfield is just a quick dash up the A90 from Aberdeen. Situated a few miles inland from Peterhead the aerodrome was operational as RAF Peterhead between 1941 and 1945. At its peak nearly 3000 personnel were on site and the Aberdeenshire skies were filled with the sound of Hurricanes Spitfires and Mustangs. Today you can still see a few vestiges of Longside's RAF past with pillboxes clearly visible from the air despite most of the land being returned to agricultural use. You'll also notice that Longside still has a tarmac runway -
quite a rarity in North East Scotland! Now operated as a small and friendly facility this airfield which is easily accessible from Aberdeen is a great place to learn to fly. Your CAA flight instructor/examiner is Bill Anderson who has flown pretty much every type of aircraft going working for the RAF and as a commercial pilot too.
