The trails in our neck of the woods get pretty hairy pretty fast so weve found them to be the perfect testing ground for fast & tough wheels like our Traverse 29 Carbon. The steep climbs & descents helped inspire some pretty radical designs & most importantly left us with no doubt that these wheels will exceed your expectations. Lets talk about those expectations. They include everything from the ability to stay true after launching off drops to being light enough to efficiently pedal to the top of a climb—and they all begin with the rim. Our engineers knew they wanted carbon fibre & with the inclusion of our Zero Bead Hook design they were able to implement a continuous fibre layup across the sidewall & rim bed. & when paired with a whopping 30-millimeter internal rim width they made a wheel thats super resilient to impact with low rolling resistance & incredible traction. Youll also find that it helps prevent burping during hard cornering while also making tubeless set up quick & easy. Along with light overall weight stiffness & durability another top priority for the Traverse was ease of use. First off we got rid of the creaky straight-pull spokes & corrosion-prone alloy nipples. Next up we landed on 28 J-bend spokes for front & rear wheels that are all the same length—making it easy to find replacements if needed. & finally we engineered a new hub design with a wider profile & higher flange to aid in overall stiffness. A wider rim does a variety of things for ride performance—it better supports the tire for increased confidence & grip & it affords you the ability to run lower pressures that help spread impact out over a larger surface area to reduce the risk of damage. & when you combine this girth with the notoriously fast rolling 29 platform you’re left with an incredibly stiff quick to accelerate wheelset that climbs just as well as it shreds descents. After designing the perfect trail rim we kept our lightweight & durable design properties in mind with the wheel build h&-lacing the rims with DT Swiss 350 Classic hubs via 28 DT Swiss Competition Race spokes & brass Pro Lock nipples. Inside youll find sealed cartridge bearings & a 36t quick engagement ratchet system for quick accelerations. We also wanted to ensure that each wheel was built correctly & we found that this could only be achieved by h&. Machines we found have a tendency to miss little mistakes that humans catch. While there may be a linear relationship between increased tire size & increased fun this relationship only holds true when wider tires are paired with the correct width rims. Having a 2.8 or high-volume tire mated to a narrow rim makes for a squirmy poor handling experience & when you’re on the hunt for additional fun these characteristics are undesirable. Lucky for you the new age of traction stability & speed has arrived—and its name is the Traverse 38 SL Fattie 27.5. Along with light overall weight stiffness & durability another top priority for the Traverse SL was ease of use. First off we got rid of the creaky straight-pull spokes & corrosion-prone alloy nipples. Next up we landed on 28 J-bend spokes for front & rear wheels that are all the same length—making it easy to find replacements if needed. & finally we engineered a new hub design with a wider profile & higher flange to aid in overall stiffness. While our 38-millimeter Traverse SL is already wider than most offerings the benefits of three-inch tires become more apparent with a proper rim interface. In search for the proper width our engineers tested various iterations from 30 to 45 millimetres to determine where the sweet spot lies. What they ended up with is a 38-millimeter internal rim width that turns the Traverse 38 SL Fatties into descending machines . A wide internal rim width endows riders with a variety of advantages that are exemplified even more with plus-sized tires. The extra width allows for more tire volume translating into more supple ride qualities & better support for the tire meaning that youll experience less burping when riding tubeless & a drastic increase in traction. After determining the proper rim width for the plus-sized application we began designing the rim using the same low-weight high-strength technologies used in the Traverse SL & the Control SL. With this we started with our Zero Bead Hook design that effectively eliminates the biggest weak spot found in traditional rims & topped it off by using high-modulus carbon fibre to keep the weight down. & to further this theme the wheels also include the Roval tubeless plug system which sheds an additional 50 grams-per-wheel compared to a rim strip Each Traverse 38 SL Fattie is h&-built to our own alloy hubs with DT Swiss Competition Race spokes. Inside our hubs youll find sealed cartridge bearings all-around & a quick-engaging 54t DT Swiss star ratchet system in the rear that means that you can power over rocks & roots without delay. & while machines do a decent job of building wheels we choose professionally trained humans to build ours as they catch various flaws that a machine would otherwise miss.
