Harrison P. Spader sat a little too close. Shook hands a little too long. High-fived a little too hard. & hugged a little too much. Harrison P. Spader was a personal space invader. Author Christianne Jones uses humour & relatable situations to teach early learners about self awareness. In Harrodsburg, Dougie Wallace looks at the excessive wealth & consumerism that can be found around the Knightsbridge area close to the world famous department store, Harrods. From the mid-1970s onwards, Gulf millionaires began coming to the area. They were later joined by the Oligarchs & the Hedgies, in a phenomenon that now involves all the various tribes of the global super-rich buying up London properties as if they were assets to appreciate in value rather than homes in which to live. The work is a powerful, timely & stark expose of the emergence of this ultra-affluent elite who are changing the face of the city, pricing out not just ordinary people but even the upper middle class natives of Central London, & marginalising old wealth from their time-honoured habitats. Employing his trademark wit & keen eye for the absurd, Wallace has produced an uncompromising & revealing series of pictures which draw attention to the excesses of the super rich in powerful & direct detail. Harrodsburg is introduced by cultural commentator Peter York, perhaps best known for his best-selling 1970’s classic The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook. Most recently, in November 2016 he presented Peter York's Hipster Handbook on BBC4. ...

Harrogate & Ripon, just a few miles apart in one of the most beautiful localities in Yorkshire, have rarely had their contributions to the Great War told all together, in one volume. Stephen Wade has written an account of their importance, from the Ripon camps, where thousands of infantrymen for Kitchener's new Pals' Battalions were trained, to the many Harrogate hospitals where casualties were cared for. Added to this are stories of local individuals, at home & in the European theatre of war, who played their part in this massive conflict. Harrogate & Ripon, made the usual contributions to the war effort, raising money & making food, but the local people experienced many of the significant Yorkshire events of the war, such as the explosion at Barnbow munitions factory & the housing of Belgian refugees. The book tells the stories of not only the heroes, such as Betty Stevenson & Donald Bell VC, but of the ordinary Yorkshire folk who endured the hardships & made great sacrifices. The book provides ample evidence that Harrogate & Ripon, along with their surrounding areas, have a fine record for courage & determination during the First World War. ...

" The Harrogate Great Chronicle" is a unique & new type of local book. Part I, the printed book, is a complete history of the crucial early development of the English Spa from its earliest documentary reference in 1322 to the Harrogate Improvement Act of 1841. In many ways it acts as a prequel to the late H.H. Walkers monumental " History of Harrogate under the Improvement Commissioners, 1841-1884". It is an evenly flowing narrative which is particularly concerned with the discovery, use & promotion of the mineral wells, whose health-giving powers became the foundation of Harrogates later prosperity. Along with the history of the spa, & the important role of the Duchy of Lancaster in urban development, Part I also considers the changing role of education, hospitals, schools, religion & the churches, local government & poor law, transport, social history, the enclosure movement & how national events such as plagues, revolution & war all affected life in one small Yorkshire town. The author has consulted virtually every original source of information, many of which are to found as far afield as London or Oxford, in order to produce a strikingly comprehensive & useful narrative. Uniquely, in Part II of the " Harrogate Great Chronicle" he has ordered virtually all of these source materials into 24 sections which
- because of their sheer size
- have been reproduced in digital form on a CD-ROM which is bound into the case of this hardback volume. The narrative history of Part I refers constantly to the source material in Part II, an approach which allows other readers to test the authors conclusions & which, importantly, provides local people with an absolutely vast source of information about the early history & development of their town. Local people & historians everywhere will find masses of new information & new insight in this unique publication. Part I in book form; Part II on CD-ROM is bound into the back of the case.
