1908, this Arts and
Crafts design is more
sophisticated and complex
than it first appears and
has recently been
reworked. From Liberty of
London, the dense
foliage would be
overpowering in the hands
of less skilled artisans.
By working with tonal
blues on a white ground,
there’s a subtlety here
that makes this a very
versatile pattern. From a
distance it’s almost

commissioned by Liberty
of London from Japanese
artist Nana Shiomi. It is
a traditional ukiyo-e,
and it clearly uses the
traditional tonal texture
as a backdrop for the
beautiful jumping fish.
There is so much movement
here; the foaming waves;
the leaping fish. Even
the way the eye travels
up the design is
deliberate and masterful.
