'Ian Rhodes' is a Liberty of London design on fine Tana lawn cotton which takes its inspiration from the idea of a well beloved, well used box of artists' watercolours. It beautifully evokes the translucency and slight earthiness of this delicate, radiant medium - but the artist has been very careful not to contaminate her colours! Madder reds abound, alongside yellow ochre, Prussian blue, umber, oxide green, chrome orange and dark plum. A busy, bright, exuberant piece that also explores ideas of lightness, delicacy and freedom of execution. Very refreshing and perfect for Spring/Summer. 'Moore' three button cuff.
The artist and designer Robert Stewart was a contemporary of Lucienne Day and one of the few designers she admired. Together they pioneered British textile design after the war. A prolific creator, Stewart produced paintings, tapestries, graphics, ceramics and murals but it is his textile designs that have been the most influential, particularly those produced by Liberty. 'Boat Race' was created by him in 1954 and revived by Liberty in the 90s. A Liberty design classic from the archive exclusive to Simon Carter. Boat Race is an abstract composition with the feeling of a stencil collage, inspired perhaps by Miro. Streamlined and canoe-like horizontal forms are juxtaposed with tall, elegant rhomboids and interspersed with stylised tiny floral and leaf stalk accents. Cleverly rendered in a palette of primary colours, translucency is evoked as the forms change hue where they overlap the mid cerulean ground. This is Modernist fabric design at its best. 'Moore' three button cuff.
Lee Manor on finest Liberty Tana Lawn cotton is a bold, exuberant Paisley. Richly coloured and detailed its curving, sensuous forms, completely fill space - a riotous invasion of arabesques and floral accents. The palette includes rose pink, midnight blue, malachite green, chrome yellow and carmine. Lee Manor is named after Sir Arthur Liberty's country estate, which he extended, improved and populated with 'lots of pubs'. 'Moore' three button cuff.
Lee Manor on finest Liberty Tana Lawn cotton is a bold, exuberant Paisley. Richly coloured and detailed its curving, sensuous forms, completely fill space - a riotous invasion of arabesques and floral accents. The palette replaces pink in the multi version with red in this one to nudge the overall effect towards the hotter end of the spectrum. Lee Manor is named after Sir Arthur Liberty's country estate, which he extended, improved and populated with 'lots of pubs'. 'Moore' three button cuff.
A charming Liberty Tana Lawn with a suggestion of chinoiserie in the drawing and hatching, and of texture - tapestry or embroidered. Called "Gaggle" it has some geese and another water bird in 'primitivist' style serenely floating on stylised water currents, rendered by vertical strokes in two blues to give a lovely irregular rhythm and movement. The birds are painted in a contrasting but complimenting coral. Three button cuff.
Robert Stewart was a Scottish designer and artist, a contemporary of Lucienne Day and one of the few designers she admired. Together they pioneered modern British textile design after the war. A prolific maker, Stewart produced paintings, tapestries, graphics, ceramics and murals but it is his textile designs that have been most influential, particularly those produced for Liberty. 'Macra Dance' was originally called Macrahanish and was created by Robert Stewart in 1954. This archive Liberty of London design is exclusive to Simon Carter. Dignified, aristocratic, marionette-like figures ride giant, semi-mechanical fish. An autochthon raises his arms in a gesture of worship perhaps and a magic, elemental force passes between them. I particularly like how the drawings have been surrounded by an imprecise light area, isolating or containing them gently in the soft blue ground. An abstract, highly creative device. A beautiful, accomplished design. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
Morris butterfly, inspired by, of course, the great William Morris is a design which utilises the superior definition offered by fine Tana Lawn cotton to its full extent. A stylised, Art Nouveau butterfly and floral motif, mirrored and repeated evokes the sense perhaps, of the view in a kaleidoscope or of an elaborate stained glass window. In soft yellow ochre, pale blue and dusky lavender it is exquisitely tasteful and refined. Possibly my favourite shirt of the season because of its elegance and understatement. 'Moore' three button cuff.
Brighton Blossom is a charming Liberty original on finest Tana lawn cotton, printed in Italy in Liberty's dedicated facility. Recalling art nouveau block printed wallpaper designs it features a delicate, cinquefoil inspired flower form in white and pink against undulating foliage with vestigial spent sepals, rendered in a simple, flat scheme to make fullest use of the beautiful soft colours: sage green, pale grey and cerulean against a midnight blue ground. Delightful! 'Moore' three button cuff.
Prospect Road is a truly delightful Liberty of London design dating from 1968. Strongly inspired by Fauvism, a wooded, perhaps idyllic suburban vista with trees, clouds and blue sky is rendered in strong planes of colour, boldly outlined and infilled in parts, with a rather celebratory, freely executed detailing of leaves and texture. The colour palette is joyous - mint and lime greens, ultramarine, carmine, madder and soft pinks, chromium orange and deep purple. Positively delirious! But also restful and uplifting. I absolutely love this design, very fresh, rather beautiful.
An unusual archive Liberty of London print, circa 1954, exclusive to Simon Carter. A study of traditional 'catseye' marbles, originally in gouache - an earthier, opaque medium compared to translucent watercolour which is more often the source of Liberty art prints. The design feels decidedly modernist with its bold regular forms at various scales combined with undulating, or twisting almost organic colour elements. Bold, but with a delightfully muted palette of dusky pinks, grey and olive green. I find it rather enchantingly absorbing and peaceful. Three button cuff.
A distant relative of the evergreen 'Strawberry Thief' design by William Morris, 'Peach Porter has stylised fruit and exotic flowers in a tangled field of stems, leaves and small five-petalled blooms. The 'thief' in this case is a frog. A classic Liberty Art Nouveau design on Tana lawn, which is noted for its quality and softness. A three button ("Moore") design with classic collar. This colourway on Tana Lawn is exclusive to Simon Carter.
Tiny Dancer explores the notion of pattern as rhythm, in a syncopated linear motif suggesting movement, progression and flow. Balletic male and female figures, part silhouetted with vestigial, economic lines suggesting muscular tension alternate between high energy poses and rest; paired or alone, arching, leaping, reaching or standing this is a deceptively simple design which juxtaposes a number of contrasting ideas. A 'recent vintage', circa 2015, Tiny Dancer is exclusive to Simon Carter for this season. Matt flesh tone, chrome orange, cobalt blue, sap green hues with rich brown accents are laid over a black ground to give a dramatic, arresting yet restful effect. On finest Tana Lawn cotton.

A prolific creator, Stewart produced paintings, tapestries, graphics, ceramics and murals but it is his textile designs that have been the most influential, particularly those produced by Liberty. Created by Robert Stewart and printed at Liberty's Merton works in 1950 'Sun Man' is an archive Liberty of London design exclusive to Simon Carter. A totemic smiling sun face is surrounded by triangular, irregularly drawn elements, looping, criss-cross and trefoil devices. A design which mixes the quirky, or endearing, with pure abstraction - a Robert Stewart hallmark. And suggests perhaps a primitive celebration of the power of natural forces. A beautifully resolved design in a muted grey-blue with white accents and a notable confidence in the underlying draughtsmanship and sense of balance. 'Moore' three button cuff.
Puppy dogs and pastels, glasses and fruit, a bow tie, a scarf and much more besides accompany the artist settling in for a spot of creative genius. This is Liberty's 'studio' print and, well, I wish I had a studio like that. It looks positively enchanting. The design emphasise the particular charms of drawing and wash, always a great combination I think. Light, bright and rather sweet with an air of freedom and improvisation. 'Moore' three button cuff. />
Fun pattern from Liberty of London featuring candied fruits, jammie dodgers, jelly beans, sherbet, frosted doughnuts, allsorts - literally! In a mixture of acid and pastel hues it's sweet for sure, but with a little bit of bite. Go on, dive in! In fine Tana Lawn cotton. Classic collar, three button cuff. Sensibly slim fit with two back darts and a split back yoke
Winter Berry Tana Lawn from Liberty looks at the idea of tenacity and renewal as hedgerow berries persist into the colder months to, eventually seed new life in the Spring. In a palette of electric cobalt, carmines and deep purple it makes for a rich, juicy seasonal feast!
Amazing tropicalised Paisley in which the clasic damask has taken root on a desert island in the Pacific, sprouting clusters of heart shaped, nectar-rich blooms, drooping garlands, sinuous, trailing stems and curling fern-like fronds. Hand drawn and inked in cyan and scarlet lake on a soft midnight blue, this is an exuberant, joyously improvisatory take on a traditional theme. With a 'Moore' three button cuff.
