This absolutely delightful print is a Liberty design in fine Tana lawn from their archive, exclusive to Simon Carter dates from the 1940s. Unfortunately the name of the original artist is lost in the mists of time. It features the Mardi Gras in an early form, with rural South American dancers enjoying the carnival before the privations of Lent have to be faced. It is very sweet, naive and rather nicely done, with rich watercolour, or possibly gouache marks carefully describing the exotic, flowing dresses, wild jewellery and headdresses of solo 'carnival queens' alongside the costumes and features of rather less flamboyant couples. A wonderful range of softly bright colours and contrasts, lovely poise overall, tasteful, slightly dream-like and nostalgic. 'Moore' three button cuff.
