A deep plunge into a
rather delirious
hallucinated world full
of my favourite colours:
indigo, viridian,
phthalo blue, cobalt,
sand, magenta and, er,
coral. A more exuberant
and Summery shirt one
could hardly imagine,
with various fascinating
natural forms, rather
beautifully limned and
inked, waving gently in
the warm deep. Very
bright, vivid, striking
but, of course,

This design is inspired
by the Victorian practice
of, as it were,
honouring plants by
painting them rather
carefully and them
framing the result in an
elaborate border,
especially as it relates
to those which have
therapuetic value.
Amongst which, depicted
here are: echinacea,
ginkgo, gardenia and
camellia. This piece was
designed with an Italian
printed house and printed
in Italy. We wanted
superior definition to
show of all the little,
fascinating details in
the design and to make a
feature of the rather
subtle palette of soft
varied blues, from
Prussian through royal
blue to cyan, madder
pinks, carmine, ochre
and radiant greys. A

An extremely beautiful
shirt in dark and rich
tones on a variegated
navy ground. Vines,
drooping berry clusters,
passion flowers, tiny
forest blooms in
saturated reds, or
earthy pink to vellum
amongst twilit statuesque
and graceful foliage
forms are visited by
various exotic night
birds, perching serenely
while frogs hop about on
the forest floor. Look
closely and you might
find some little Panama
hats have found their way

tribute to the world of
vintage botanical
illustrations. I find the
care, in fact,
devotion, to the subject
one finds in these
artworks compelling. This
one features some
clustered fruits, the
seed head of a poppy,
pea pod, pine cone and
other forms of fecund,
final development.

feature prominently,
along with coppery
greens, umber and ochre

This rather beautiful
design mixes two
contrasting aesthetic
ideas - flowers are
illustrated in rich,
sumptuous colour, but
interspersed are delicate
line drawn versions of
the same forms, without
any colour. It is, in my
view, rather
sophisticated and
compelling. Madder rose,
electric blue, copper
and burnt orange,
purple, carmine, sap
green through to deep ivy
colours are set against a
more vestigial, stark
motif. The plants
illustrated have
medicinal properties, so
this harks back to
Victorian botanical
illustrations which often
celebrated these useful
