A plethora of brightly coloured, characterful birds - hoopoe, peacock, bluethroat, woodpecker, various titmice and a godwit strut their stuff on this arresting shirt rendered in delicate washes of translucent pigment with a wonderful freedom combined with accuracy and observation. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
A design inspired by natural abundance and the beauty of butterflies. Stylised, monochromatic swallowtails and monarchs in various sizes are rendered in faded brown tones against a mottled or textured blue ground. The slight natural dissonance of blue and brown comes into play and the overall effect is of rhythm and fluttering movement. Single button cuff, classic collar shirt in superior quality pure cotton with a tailored, comfortable fit
This is a beautiful shirt made from a lightly brushed, superior cotton with a slightly more open weave. Very soft and tactile. It is printed with a variety of small birds of garden, heath, woodland and tundra. Pheasant, nuthatch, redstart, house finch, snow bunting and some others, on an off-white ground. The bright birds are nicely spaced to give a calm, gentle effect. This is one of my Crystal Maze shirts, worn by the presenter of the show - the wonderful Richard Ayoade. Jagger single button cuff.
Carrying on with this season's theme of monochromatic elements on a sky blue ground we have a rather nicely drawn dalmation amongst regularly spaced carmine dots, on sky. Rather playful but eminently practical and versatile. The doggy is shown in typical hound stance and the whole effect is lighthearted, but smart and contained. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
A man is, bravely, walking 16 dogs in the rain. Let's hope they don't all spot a cat! Really an opportunity to have a bit a of a creative play with a loosely radiating linear idea, placement and position. The figure, holding an umbrella, is shown standing and walking - a strong vertical. The various dogs - scottie, doberman, bull terrier, dalmation, collie and so on are shown frontally, three quarters view or side-on, sitting or standing and the whole scene is rather gentle and peaceful. The line drawing and tinting, in a restrained but radiant palette, have a certain charm and naturalism and the design is printed on a light sky blue superior cotton chambray, luxuriously soft and fine. 'Jagger' single button cuff, lined cuff, collar and plaquet.
A beautiful design produced for Richard Ayoade, presenter of The Crystal Maze television show. It is taken from exquisitely detailed, delicately coloured illustrations of various exotic dragonflies. Their jewel-like tints, striking markings and intricate structures are faithfully reproduced with the species, genus, classification and such written in a careful hand beside. Most are pictured in flight, with one alighting on honeysuckle. It is printed on a natural, slightly off-white ground. Pure cotton 'Jagger' single button cuff.
This design continues an ongoing fascination with the decorative power of dragonflies. Various species are shown here, juxtaposed, from the largest to the diminutive, delicate damselflies. Very naturalistically rendered with a particular joy taken in the saturated jewel-like colours: vivid reds, earthy brown, cobalt, indigo, jade green and emerald, deep purple, mint and Venetian pink. A brilliant celebration of the elegance, complexity and beauty of dragonflies. With a single button cuff, classic, collar and intelligent, tailored regular fit
A rather beautifully, and exactingly drawn dragonfly covers a sky blue surface. Though dramatic in arrangement and execution this design produces a rather calm, quiet effect. One is reminded of the hum, or purr of dragonfly wings as the magical creatures dart and hover above tranquil meads. Monochromatic, or near monochromatic forms on sky are a theme for this season. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
Another design inspired by the natural world, chosen by Richard Ayoade to be worn on his show The Crystal Maze. This one features many different kinds of ladybird. Considerable care has been taken to paint these ladybirds as naturalistically as possible. A bright, bold, animated design with its jewel-like madder reds, ochre yellows and blacks, that celebrates pattern in nature and design. On a neutral toned, pure cotton ground, single button 'Jagger' cuff.
Monochrome design on a natural uncoloured ground featuring some prehistoric creatures - living ones, and skeletal remains! The shirt is another that explores the theme of how our fascination with the natural world is recorded in illustration. There is something rather intriguing about the intent and care with which drawings of nature are observed, and imagined, a sort of contemplation or measured inquiry into the complexities of form. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
Some of our favourite doggies are presented in silhouette, drawn in that rather elegant, pointed way that was characteristic of 1950s cartoons. A celebration of retro colours, with their slight earthiness, luminosity and high saturation: mustard yellow, cadmium orange, bleu d'Angleterre, burnt sienna, soft indigo. Rather upbeat and stylish for my Spring/Summer 2020 collection. With a single button cuff, classic collar and easy regular fit with subtle tailoring for a great confidence-inspiring wear
A charming, restful design known as "wildlife print" though, in fact, we have a beagle in there and another kind of hound; along with some foxes and ducks, in nicely inked, monochrome Autumnal tones, all getting along marvellously in a marshy environment with bulrushes and other slender reed and mead flower forms having flashes and splashes of dusky colour. This is a chambray, woven from a white weft and a coloured warp to give a gently contrasting ground and subtly textural context.
From the entomologist's studio to my latest shirt, exploring the busy but ordered, symmetrical energy of exotic bugs. A perfect space to not only explore the fascination of forms, but the farther reaches of colour - madder reds, oxide greens, cinnamon, phthalocyanin blue and rose pink, with darker hues interposing. There is an ongoing preoccupation with the meticulousness and devotion of these classic zoological depictions, that are highly accomplished, yet modest in their intent - simply to record, as faithfully as possible. One might say that such things are unconsciously beautiful. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
Another design from the archive of Liberty of London, which I am always so overjoyed to explore. Called Fête this tableau presents various characters, drawn with an elegant, sweeping hand, exquisitely inked and tinted. A maypole dance is in progress attended by a Scotsman in Highland dress, a sailor, a "dandy" and a bulldog for good measure. Also shown are a couple of policemen, bearskin hatted army drummers, a Chelsea pensioner, a scholar or student and a Welsh woman in national dress with characteristic conical hat. A quintessentially British Victorian or Edwardian gathering. A bright, detailed, colourful print with oodles of charm.
A fine denim shirt with various birds - hornbills, wrens, lapwings, hoatzin and what not, drawn in a style that resembles chalk on a blackboard. It is lined at the collar, plaquet and cuffs with a similarly rendered pattern of ferns. An easy intriguing piece with nice texture and atmosphere. With a single button cuff.
Our four legged friends are shown here in all their endearing, impressive and soulful manifestations. A monochromatic design in a deep Prussian blue, with nicely drawn dogs - basset hound, pointer, bloodhound and some others, standing, alert, ready to work or play. Is your favourite breed here? Single button cuff shirt, pure cotton, intelligent tailored regular tailoring for a trim, confident and comfortable fit
Moorland birds - pheasants, grouse and a ptarmigan or two strut their stuff on this Autumnal themed shirt. Rich indigo tones, browns, copper and greys contrast nicely with the subdued slightly blue ground. A counterpoint to the naturalism of the illustration is provided in the radical arrangement with birds shown inverted and at angles. The pheasant is, of course a decorative device often seen in art nouveau and art deco. Single button cuff shirt, pure cotton, classic collar and easy, tailored fit
Some ducks, a heron a and a godwit play in a phantasmagorical monochrome watery world full of lily pads, fronds and giant hallucinated blooms. It's positively Gothic! An effective contrasting of a colourless ground with the rich browns and ochres of the bird forms somewhat happily lost in their magical meads. 'Moore' (Roger) three button cuff.
Amazing fish print design in which the paint of rather beautifully rendered watercolour fish has been allowed to run producing a clever watery effect. On fine cotton to capture all the nuance of the piece with its very delicate fades and bleeds, as well as the rich colours - intense yellows, turquoise to royal blues, oxide greens cool greys and earthy browns. Quite a spellbinding thing. With a single button cuff, classic collar, tailored regular fit which is intended to give you the confidence to buy on collar size alone />
It really is bright! This design explores a theme of striated and spotted feathers. An abundance of graceful curved, and curving forms in strong and vivid tints. Burnt oranges, phthalo blue, translucent violets, ochre yellows and more. Artfully drawn and coloured it is a delightful, new season piece. Single button cuff in finest European cotton, classic collar, sensible slim fit with two back darts and a split back yoke.
Another dive, literally, into the fascinating world of zoological illustration where we encounter many species of rather nicely, naturalistically painted fish. The forms intrigue, the subtleties of colouration delight, iridescent and muted by turns. A celebration of the natural world, and that of the diligent Victorian observer. In a fine texture cotton for superior definition of printed elements. Single button cuff, classic collar, intelligent tailored fit for an easy, confidence-inspiring wear
Another Crystal Maze shirt inspired by the beauty and intrigue of natural forms as recorded in textbook illustrations through the ages. In this case birds' eggs, gathered together to highlight and contrast the fascinating range of hues, markings and sizes to be found. From pale, limpid greens and blues to dark chocolate browns, chestnut, oxide reds and cool marble green. Featureless or bespeckled, collected and arranged, as here, they produce a wonderfully confident, striking design - perfect for TV, but also for your every day collection! Pure cotton 'Jagger' single button cuff.
A design which leverages the infectious charm of traditional German nutcracker dolls. Symbols of safety and domestic contentment, having the ability to ward off evil spirits but not to crack nuts any more! These smartly turned out soldiers line up correctly, as you would expect, to give us an intriguing repeat pattern in deep red, pine green, yellow gold and some beautiful bright blues on a quiet blue grey ground. Single button cuff and classic collar using our intelligent tailoring which guarantees the fit according to the collar size
Dogs in jumpers. Any questions? Fun, lighthearted design with some of our favourite four-legged friends wrapped up warm in doggy pullovers. A high quality, fine cotton shirt to delight in and enjoy for years to come. Single button cuff, classic collar, lined at the collar, cuff and plaquet in my intelligent tailored construction for an effortlessly comfortable, confidence-inspiring fit
A beautiful shirt which makes as much of a feature of space as it does the lovingly illustrated South African bird species which inhabit it most serenely. Hummingbird is here, hoopoe, cape rock thrush, pelican and some other shore birds. The richly coloured birds are set upon a strikingly complementary beige ground, mixing bright, jewel-like detail with warm expansiveness. Birds often feature in my designs but I think this might be my favourite so far. Three button 'Moore' cuff.
Printed on superior, finest Italian cotton. The greater part of the museum's collection of Coleoptera has escaped onto my Spring/Summer 'beetles' print shirt, though, in fact, a horseshoe crab and some moths have come along for the ride too. A densely patterned piece which explores the jewel-like colours and effects of exotic beetles; iridescent jade and copper greens, electric blues with touches of purple, orange and yellow here and there. A striking, closely executed design on a vertical mode, suggesting, perhaps, a preserved collection of rare and interesting species from far flung corners. Single button cuff.
Oxford fabric has a basketweave structure and is noted for its soft, supple quality. My luxurious Oxford insect print shirt exemplifies this having a beautiful yielding softness and crease resistance. Slightly subverting the association with formal dress shirts I have over printed it with a variety of insect forms in jewelled colour, monochrome and colour plus monochrome: butterflies, hawk moths, shield bugs and ladybirds flit across its superior surface. A fine, practical and high quality garment. Single button cuff, classic collar, subtle tailored regular fit
The concept here is 'individualism'. Intensely coloured tiny birds disport themselves upon a standard issue sky blue and white striped ground. It's a mixture of formal and eccentric with, I think, the quirky side just winning. But it is also in line with a theme for this season - the juxtaposition of regular, measured elements with free organic ones. It is lined at the collar, cuffs and plaquet with a charming 'birds in cages' design featuring similar exotic species tucked up in old-fashioned ornamental coops. Single button - 'Jagger', cuff.
A hovering owl, a perching one, a bat and something else - a goshawk I think, haunt a burgundy suffused twilight. A rich, Autumnal design in which the birds and bat are rendered almost - vestigially, like linocuts perhaps so that they blend with the background colour, or emerge from it in ghostly fashion. Rather a beautiful thing, with a touch of humour, charm and wonderful understatement. In a superior cotton to achieve the necessary definition. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
This is fun: flounders, marlin, sharks and architeuthis - well, squid, and other monochromatic denizens of the deep swim in a rainbow striated world comprised of energetic, tense, painterly horizontal marks. Mono and multi join happily to give a perfectly serviceable for the office - with those touches of eccentricity and humour that I love to add, which is also distinctive enough for occasions. Fine cotton 'Jagger' - single button cuff. Will instantly enliven any old gloomy Monday.
A blue and yellow macaw, that most magnificent of parrots, perches serenely amidst trailing fronds, burgeoning seed clusters and skeletal leaves. An original design which recalls the aesthetic movement for which parrots were a favourite motif, notably in the work of William de Morgan, and of art deco later. Pure quality cotton shirt with a single button cuff, classic collar and our intelligent tailored fit which is cleverly proportioned according to the collar size. All you need to know is the neck measurement and the shirt is pretty much guaranteed to be an excellent fit />
A restful, peaceful thing. Water birds paddle, rise, or stand in a gently lit pondscape. I keep thinking about this Roman idea - 'otium', usually translated as 'leisure' but which really goes beyond our present concept of leisure as rest into one of an trouble-free space in which inspiration can arise naturally. Something more like contemplation, or meditation. Anyway, the birds here are particularly richly coloured, both contrasting and blending with the light blue ground. There is some very delicate shading going on here with the water ripple effects. The design is printed on a superior quality Oxford cotton, with a beautiful, soft hand feel in order to obtain the necessary definition. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
A design inspired by Victorian era circus poster illustrations - specifically American ones in fact; such as those of Barnum & Bailey "The Greatest Show On Earth". Here we have some nicely drawn creatures - a superb tiger; a monkey and a bear, both riding American Star bicycles - they had the big wheel at the back, the opposite our own Penny Farthing, and one top hatted ursine astride a "Dandy Horse". I love this design with its energy, the beautiful rich, vintage colours and contrasts; fun certainly, dynamic but having a sort of inner calm or sense of nostalgia. The collar, cuff and plaquet are lined with another circus theme print and the shirt has a single button cuff.
This shirt, apart from being a rather beautiful thing, is notable for its colour combinations. Blue with brown is classically thought to be 'dissonant'. We have a primary - blue and the true, or painter's tertiary - brown, which results from an equal mix of the three primaries. These colours are a long way from each other on the colour wheel and so we think of them as dissonant. But, it a rather lovely dissonance even so. The fish are painted simply, but carefully with subtle gradations of tone and strong, confident lines. But we also have a crustacean or two for company! The ground is a pale blue and there is an intriguing kind of visual push-pull of earthy and aqueous tones. The effect is rather expansive and serene. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
Another dive into the rich world of early twentieth century cigarette cards. This time a set from John Player and Sons called 'Aviary and Cage Birds', created in 1933. A number of species are beautifully illustrated with rich, vivid colours, having that slight earthiness to them which was characteristic of the time, and painted with wonderful observation. Mini masterpieces really. Swinson's lorikeet, crested cockatoo, red and blue macaw, zebra finch, black-headed Gouldian finch, rosy faced love bird, and more. Pure cotton, single button cuff, classic collar shirt withe beauty and charm />
Another example of a recent innovation of mine, which is to combine jacquard pattern making with printed elements. The underlying motifs are rendered as part of the weave of the fabric, emerging from the loom in one operation. Printed elements are overlaid on this to produce a really fascinating juxtaposition especially where the woven and printed elements overlap. An underlying in-fabric design of large flower forms in grey blue tones is the canvas on which vivid tropical birds and flowers are printed; two colours of cockatoo and a delightful budgerigar perch among vivid trailing lilac blooms. The fabric is a superior, light and very supple cotton in anticipation of the warmer months. Single button cuff shirt with classic collar. Intelligent tailored fit for a confidence-inspiring, easy wear
A rumble in the jungle as a jumble of characterful African animals - lions, a macaw, giraffe, zebra, hippo, croc and toucan. Some cheetahs and elephants, with tiny butterflies interposing. In a gloriously radiant palette of translucent tints, from vivid scarlet and electric blue to subtle sand and greys. A wonderful celebration of the natural world, pattern and colour on finest cotton. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
As worn by Paul Merton. This design looks at wild animals as seen through Victorian eyes. It's interesting, they are naturalistically enough drawn but have, let's say - a certain naivety, as though the ferocity and power of tigers, leopards, lions has been under-emphasised. In this age I think we would slightly err to the other side - we would unconsciously accentuate those qualities. The colours are beautiful, having a kind of burnished, aged feel - our leopard glows, the jaguar is lit as though in the setting sun. Again we are looking at the world of illustration through the ages, and loving its modesty, devotion and unconscious charm. Single button cuff, finest cotton, intelligent tailored regular fit and classic collar
The bright, energetic forms of cicadas present an opportunity to create a starkly geometric design which, at the same time, manages to create an undulating rhythmic motif from the creatures' legs and antennae. Wonderful, saturated colours with deep shaded crimson, oxide greens and old gold. Simple, and beautiful. Single button cuff shirt, 100% high quality cotton, classic collar, in our intelligent tailored fit between a slim and a regular fit and cleverly crafted to fit the majority of men relative to collar size
