This charming design

produced for Richard
Ayoade, presenter of The
Crystal Maze, to be worn
on the show. It features
an array of exotic bugs,
exploiting their rich,
jewel-like colours and
elegant forms. Most are
arranged on a vertical,
with some offset at 45
degrees to give a bit of
variety and contrast. The
inspiration is of an
insect collection, in
which the entomologist
has artfully juxtaposed
some with wings displayed
if those are noteworthy,
and others - like the
lady bugs, closed. This
is a 'Jagger', which
means a single button
cuff, on finest cotton.
A striking celebration of
natural colour, form and
pattern.

cigarette cards. I could

Tucking nicely into the
new season's focus on the
theme of 'circus' this
shirt features vintage
trapeze artistes doing
their thing amongst long,
skinny wires. It's nice
how a certain delight and
freedom has been taken in
drawing the apparatus to
form an elegant
quasi-striped ground on
which the small,
intensely coloured
gymnasts arch and dive.
The colours are very
saturated, recalling
those in Victorian circus
posters which this design
celebrates - looking
closely we can see that
the costumes are indeed
from that vivid age. A
single button cuff shirt
which is fresh and
practical with a good
dose of close-up
fascination.

We have developed a new
approach to printing on
linen blends, a way to
preserve the detail and
colour richness of the
original artwork. Not an
easy thing to do, as I
am sure you can
appreciate The relatively
open weave of the fabric
- 70% cotton, 30% linen
in fact, would tend to
work against this. We
have succeeded, as you
can see. This shirt
evokes perhaps the sense
of an enchanted,
fragrant tropical dusk.
Exotic foliage forms -
palm, monstera and
others fade gently into
the background as
twilight settles. Bright
tropical birds perch
serenely amongst them,
their vivid saturated
hues picked out in the
falling light. A
generously spaced design,
to give a sense of calm
and peaceful repose, the
natural colour, texture
and quality of the fabric
ground is allowed to come
through. The colour
palette ranges from the
most delicate sap and
blue-greens in vestigial
background leaf forms,
through ochre and
copper-red to saturated
scarlet, gold, purple
and manganese violet. A
