A key component of art
deco is the mixing of
naturalistic, figurative
elements with those that
are formalised or
abstracted. Which is the
inspiration behind this
lion head cufflink. The
creature's features are
rendered more or less
naturalistically, but
the mane is highly
stylised - a combination
of radiating and parallel
carved lines. In fact
this cufflink is based
closely on the classical
art deco lions which
flank the entrance to
Iowa Masonic Library and
Museum. The eyes are
rendered with super
bright and sparkly
Swarovski crystals and he
has an antiqued finish.

Trekking through the
wilderness one Autumn,
with my hip flask of
grog, miles from
anywhere, enthralled by
the splendid vista all
around me; the rich
auburns, reds and
cinnamon hues of fading
foliage, the distant
silvery gleam of a river,
the hint of an
approaching shower and
the far mountains with
their snow capped lofty
heads in mist, a feather
came floating down at my
feet. I looked up but
there were no birds to be
seen. Whence had it come?
I don't know but it gave
me a great idea for a

A beautiful and delicate
design in malachite,
this cufflink is part of
my 'Darwin' range,
inspired by the life and
works of Charles Darwin.
Though this is a
rendering of a tree frog,
not the frog Charles
Darwin discovered in
Chile during his voyage
on HMS Beagle, and which
is named after him -
rhinoderma darwinii. Real
malachite and Swarovski
crystals are hand set on
a polished silver-tone

A garden is a lovesome
thing God wot - Thomas
Edward Brown. I agree. It
is rather nice to stay at
home and not be hankering
after faraway adventures.
Just sit in the garden
and enjoy the sight of
the little birds pecking
at one's fat balls. With
this gentle approach to
life in mind I decided to
create a blue tit in my
favourite medium -
enamel. He is hand made,
meaning each is very
slightly different,
something I rather
welcome. The slight
translucency of enamel
over metal gives a
jewel-like, softly
glowing effect. Charming,

How do these things fly?
It always amazes me to
see these vast beetles up
in the air, drifting
about, bodies hanging
vertically down. Yet,
fly they do. In tribute
to the marvellous,
ferocious-looking but
perfectly harmless stag
beetle I bring you this
cufflink which has the
stately beast rather
nicely engraved onto a
gunmetal finished oval
base. Part of my
