This very simple lotto game will help very young children to recognize letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. It can be played by up to 5 players. Each player takes a lotto board, and players must decide whether they all play with the letter or picture sides of the boards. All the letter or picture cards are placed face down on the table, and players take it in turns to pick up one of the cards, which they show the other players. If the card matches one of the pictures or letters on their lotto board, they cover it with the card. If not, the card is returned, face down, to the table. The winner is the first player to cover all the spaces on their lotto board. There are 4 versions of the game; players can choose to match picture cards to the picture lotto boards, or letter cards to the letter lotto boards. Or, to make it slightly harder, they can try to match the picture cards to the corresponding letter boards, or match letter cards to the corresponding picture boards. Although this game is ideal for children aged 3 and over, even younger children will enjoy being helped to match the pictures. You can also ask children to find a card with a fish on, or a card with something red on it, or a card with the letter 's'. The letter cards can be used to spell out words as well, so there are many opportunities for extra play value. Children will have so much fun with this game, yet they won't realise that they are learning at the same time.

Everybody remembers the old traditional games of 'Snakes and Ladders' and 'Ludo', games which we played as children with our own parents and grandparents. Here we have two traditional games in one, thanks to the sturdy double-sided playing board. And to bring the games more up to date, they are given a fun pirate twist. In the 'Snakes and Ladders' game, the jolly pirates use rope ladders to help them take short cuts to the big treasure chest and win the game. But they have to look out for the slippery sea snakes, which send them sliding back down the board. On the reverse side of the board is the game of 'Ludo', also with a pirate twist; players each have counters, and must try to be the first to get all their counters to their special pirate treasure in the middle of the board. If they land on the same square as another player, they can send that player's counter back to the start. This can prove very exciting when several players are close to winning the treasure, but have to look out for the others trying to send them home. Both games involve a lot of luck, and 'Ludo' can also include a certain amount of strategy, so children have to learn to be patient when the game isn't going their way.

In this award winning game, players aim to grow a tall flower with as many leaves as possible before the flower blooms. Each player starts with a plant pot, and all the stalk and flower cards are spread out face down, with the colour spot showing on the reverse, around the compost heap in the middle of the table. A player rolls the die, and turns over a card with the same colour. If the card they turn over is a stalk card, they can add this to their pot and start to grow their plant, and play passes to the next player. However, if they pick up a flower, their plant is fully grown and they cannot add any more to it. They can still play, though, as they continue to take their turns, and if they pick up another flower, they can place it on another player's stem to stop their plant growing. The game is over when everyone's plant has flowered. All the players then count the leaves on their plant, and the winner is the player with the most leaves. The game helps children with counting and with colour matching, and is suitable for ages 4 to 7. Its bright colours make it appealing, and it is printed on thick, sturdy, wipe-clean card, so will withstand plenty of handling.

This beautifully illustrated, colourful game can be played in different ways while learning about animals from around the world. The game consists of four game boards, each representing a different environment: desert, jungle, ocean and polar lands. Each board shows 9 different animals that live in that environment, and there are 36 cards representing each of the animals. The game involves each player choosing a board, and the 36 animal cards are placed face down in a pile on the table. The first player picks the card from the top of the pile and names the animal on it; all players then check their boards to see if they can make a match. If a player has that animal on their board, they shout out the animal's name and place the card on their board. The winner is the first person to complete their board. The game can also be played as a memory game; the cards are spread out face down on the table, and players take it in turn to turn over a card. If it matches an animal on their board, they take the card, and if not, it is returned to the table face down. Again the winner is the first to complete their board. You can increase the play value of the game by asking children to sort the animals into the correct habitat groups without using the boards. Obviously there is plenty to talk about while playing this game: you can ask your child to find things, such as an animal that flies, an animal with tusks, an animal with antlers. You can ask them what noises some of the animals make, or talk about how they move.
Most people are familiar with the traditional game of 'Snap', which involves trying to match your card with that of another player. Shape Snap makes the game particularly appealing to young children, and helps them to learn about shapes, colours and counting along the way. The game is particularly suited to players aged from 3 to 6, but the colourful illustrations will appeal to much younger children as well, who will have fun identifying shapes, colours and images in the pictures. The game can be played by 2 to 4 players; all the 48 cards are shuffled and dealt face downwards to each player. The first player turns their top card over and places it in front of them, picture side up. Each of the other players does the same in turn. If a player sees any two top cards that match, they quickly shout "Snap", and the first person to shout wins all the cars from both of the matching piles, which they place at the bottom of their own face-down pile of cards. Once children are familiar with the different shapes, they should also call out the name of the shape, i.e. "Star snap!" The game ends when one person has won by collecting all the cards. The cards are beautifully illustrated using bright, bold colours, and show a range of different shapes, some familiar, such as circles, squares and diamonds, and some more obscure, such as hexagons, cubes and cones. The cards are large, approximately 13cm x 19cm, and many of the pictures will show more than one example of the shape - you could ask your child how many stars they can see on the card. The game will help your child with maths and English (there is an educational guide on the box), and the cards can be used for so many other fun and educational activities.
The 48 rhyming cards in this box can be used to play 3 different versions of this game. In version one, players each choose a card, and have to pick another from the cards spread face down on the table that rhymes with the one they have chosen. The aim is to make as many rhyming pairs as they can, and they have to make up a sentence using the cards that they have. They can increase their scores by collecting three or four rhyming cards, but must make up a sentence using all the rhyming cards they have. Once they have a rhyming pair, players can continue by taking more cards from the middle, aiming to produce more rhymes. The winner is the person with the highest score. In the second version of the game, players try to match the word from the top of a pile by turning over unseen cards on the table, collecting pairs that rhyme as they go. The winner is the person with the most rhyming pairs at the end of the game. In the third game, players each take a hand of two cards, and pick unseen cards from the table which they hope will rhyme with one of the cards in their hand. If they find a rhyming pair, they put the pair to one side and pick another to bring their hand back up to two cards. The winner is the player with the most rhyming pairs at the end of the game. Made from durable, thick card, and with colourful, cheerful illustrations and clear writing, this will help children with literacy skills. The game is suitable for 2 to 4 players, ideally aged from 5 to 9.
