Solid construction methods such as the hardened SnagFree base material and Armadillo Plates are signs that Stepchild takes board manufacture and durability seriously. It’s about the only thing they do take seriously, however the 2 year warranty on defects in materials and craftsmanship backs this up. The Dirtbag is low-cost but it isn’t ‘cheap’. Low key graphics and simple (yet solid) construction keep the costs down so If you’re looking for a low cost board then you can’t do better than getting one made by a true ‘by snowboarders for snowboards’ brand like Stepchild. Specification: Profile: Zero Camber Running length: 1200mm Waist width: 250mm Sidecut radius: 7.7m Setback: Centred Flex (1 soft, 10 stiff): 4 (Specification based on the 153cm board) Note: Topsheet colours are size specific Features: The highly flexible yet durable Armocore combines poplar wood stringers with an advanced wood derived composite which makes up the core. This strength and flex is well suited to park riders and jibbers. SnagFree Base Material has been hardened during the pressing process, this makes the base more durable and easier to maintain and is applied to all Stepchild snowboards. An additional diamond shaped layer of fibreglass re-enforces the binding insert area. These Armadillo Plates help to prevent inset blowouts from high impacts and heavy landings. FutureGlue is a standard on all Stepchild boards due to its unparalleled strength in bonding the base to the core. Specifically chosen to allow for more torsional flex Biax Fibreglass is made up of interweaving vertical and horizontal fibreglass stands. I like the approach taken by Stepchild. They definitely have a focus on fun and don’t take themselves too seriously. They make simple boards, that are well built (in Austria), at a price that means you still have some change for a lift ticket and maybe even enough to pay your rent. The zero camber profile makes the board extremely forgiving as well as incredibly agile. It turns on a six-pence and is a dream when it comes to butters and presses. You can’t help but have fun spinning, sliding and jumping every hit in sight. Is it for me? The flat profile and low flex rating makes for a pretty soft ride. If you prefer buttering around the resort and hitting rails in the park than charging everything at mach-10 speed then the Dirtbag is the board for you. It would make a fine board for both indoor and dry slopes - handy for us British snowboarders and has such a favourable fun-to-price ratio that you should probably have one in your quiver anyway.
The award winning Latchkey has been upgraded for this winter with the addition of Kevlar strips to increase both response and pop. It also features the new weight-saving Light Kicker core with XTC graphic application. The result is a board that’s still extremely forgiving, but is capable of popping higher and riding harder than before. The 2014/15 Latchkey comes with added fun. The True Twin shape is twin in every way. Identical nose and tail, sidecut and stance ensures the board rides exactly the same regular and switch. Putting the sustainably sourced Poplar wood core through and extra computer controlled milling process strips away excess material, meaning the Light Kicker XTC core is extremely light and doesn’t compromise on strength and durability. XTC is the process in which Stepchild apply the top graphic directly to the fibreglass in order to reduce a layer of construction and increase weight-saving further. A Biax Fibreglass weave combines two stands of fibreglass to provide a combination of mellow flex with high energy response. The reverse camber model features two full-length parallel Kevlar strips to increase pop and response. This also improves flexibility and strength without compromising the weight of the board. The Authentic camber version features one Kevlar strip. The Extruded Snag Free Base has strong impact qualities so is perfectly suited to hitting man made features in
The winner of a number of awards this season the Latchkey has everything going for it. The true-twin shape lends itself to freestyle but the rocker profile means it’ll float on those days when the park is buried with the fresh stuff. The latchkey had one of the best reactions from all the boards we tested this year. Despite its simple construction it just feels good, really good. Classed as a freestyle board based on its twin shape and forgiving flex, the Latchkey will suit beginner and intermediate resort riders who will appreciate how forgiving it is and how much there is to be had riding it. Is it for me? If you’re a freestyle rider that likes the ‘looser’ feel of rocker then the Latchkey offers what you need at a great price. Likewise the Latchkey is progression friendly so if you’re fairly new to snowboarding then mastering those turns and riding switch couldn’t be easier. It has enough versatility to take you through the park and the occasional powder day.
The quintessential urban park board has been seriously upgraded this season. A soft asymmetrical twin freestyle deck designed to dominate park, the ‘Slinger sets a new standard for twin asymetrical freestyle boards. It features a deeper heelside sidecut, a new Boost Flex Core and Ripsaw profile for MEGA pop and SUPER stability while retaining a forgiving flex. Rocker between your feet offers a forgiving feel, increases floatation and mobility while camber outside of the bindings provides explosive pop and superior edge hold. The difference with the Extended Transition version is a longer transition area where the camber blends into the nose and tail. This decreases the amount of pressure in that area allowing for free-flowing edge transfer whilst still providing solid edge hold when the camber is engaged. Carbon V’s are positioned in the nose and tail of the board, they extend out from the inserts to the effective edge and into the tip and tail. This Carbon VXR configuration stiffens the board torsionally in those areas increasing response and maximising pop while remaining softer between the bindings for torsional control. Alongside their patented R.C. (Rocker & Camber) profiles, Never Summer has developed their Vario Power Grip Sidecut. This specific sidecut geometry combats the lack of stability and edge hold which is often a side effect of older generation rocker profiles. The Low Profile Tip/Tail maximises the amount of base material in contact with the snow. This helps you to ollie and nollie higher and add stability to landings whilst also providing more float when in deep snow. The Buckwild has quickly become a favourite with the ride team, as a result the cheeky graphic can be spotted in countless magazine shoots and online video edits. The Twin Rocker profile has a long flat zone with minimal rocker. This provides a large and stable landing platform with the ‘get out of jail’ forgiveness afforded by raised contact points. With the Carbon Array 3 and Pop rods 2.0 the Buckwild is more at home charging into big booters and blasting out of the pipe than it is getting silly on the mini jib features as far as ‘park’ riding goes. Specification: Profile: Twin Rocker (Rocker, flat, rocker) Running length: 1203mm Waist width: 252mm Sidecut radius: 9400/7900/9400mm Setback: Centre Flex (1 soft, 10 stiff): 4 (Specification based on the 155cm board) Note: Diecut Base Swap - Base and topsheet colours may vary Features: A long flat zone extends well past the binding inserts with a small section of micro rocker before the nose and tail. This means the Twin Rocker Shape is hook-free for a forgiving ride but with loads of base and edge contact for grip and power. As a true twin this board is completely symmetrical meaning that it rides just as well regular as it does ‘switch’. Rather than using ABS sidewalls or those made of wood or P-Tex, Ride have developed their proprietary Slimewall sidewalls. These are made from the urethane, which is commonly used in skateboard wheels, and adds maximum dampening to the edge for a smooth ride and durable construction. Pop Rods 2.0 are carbon rods wrapped in urethane, and then strategically placed in the tip and/or tails of a board. The carbon rod gives huge pop, and the urethane wrap adds some dampening for the landing. The rods are placed on both edges; from the inserts back (or forward at the tip) this gives great pop when preloading one corner of your board i.e. for big rotational aerials. Extra large edges, with 50% more of the Rockwell Ultra Hard Steel found on regular edges means that Cleave Edge provides unmatched strength and tuneability. Ride use stitched rather than woven fibreglass in their snowboards for a more consistent and therefore stronger construction. Hybrid Glass uses triaxial stitch on top with biaxial on the base for balanced torsion and flex. Fusion 4000 is a sintered base material that is made harder, more durable and faster than the competition. With the rockered profile, true-twin shape and not exactly understated graphics you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Buckwild was a going to be a noodle aimed at jib riding and buttery silliness. However the clues are in the tech, which more than justifies its price tag and gives it the qualities of a board built for riding hard. It has fairly stiff torsional flex so is stable at speed and holds an edge right through the turn. So if your idea of fun is going further, higher and faster than everyone else on the hill then you will certainly be having more fun on the Buckwild. Is it for me? Built around a freestyle shape with performance enhancing tech the Buckwild is for intermediate to advanced park and pipe riders. It would make a great ‘resort board’ for fairly aggressive snowboarders that want a solid but fun ride for the pistes and
The Extended Transition Rocker Camber Profile was developed specifically for the Proto HD and HDX. The result is improved float and glide with effortless edge-to-edge transitions. The Blunted True-Twin Shape and new Low Profile Tip and Tail improve the freestyle capabilities of this board by increasing the effective edge and maximising base contact right to the tip and tail. The Proto HD and HDX are true all terrain boards that span park, pipe, Jib and freeride. Note: the Proto HDX is a wider version of the standard Proto HD. Specification: Profile: Extended Transition Rocker Camber Setback: 0 Flex: Medium Length CM Effective edge MM Waist Width MM Rider Weight kg 158 1250 264 63-86 Features: Like the Original RC Profile (featured on the Cobra) the Extended Transition Rocker Camber Profile provides the best of both rocker and camber in one. The difference with the Extended Transition version is a longer transition area where the camber blends into the nose and tail. This decreases the amount of pressure in that area allowing for free-flowing edge transfer whilst still providing solid edge hold when the camber is engaged. The durable, scratch and chip resistant Carbonium Topsheet gives the board a premium look to match its build quality. Not only will it look better for longer but it offers more grip than a regular gloss top sheet due to its texture, so it acts as a built in stomp pad too. Strategically placed Carbonium Laminate Technology in the top and base of board drastically increases power and performance. This lightweight design will keep these boards riding for years to come. With the Flat Out Camber profile, a mid-stiff flex and Aspen Strong core the Sabotage is incredibly snappy, with bags of pop. It’s a true twin board and had Salomon’s Royal Rubber Pads in the sidewall. These reduce heavy impacts to the edges, so it’s perfectly suited to the skilled park rider. A new model from K2 this year is the Hit Machine. Combining a flat profile (Freestyle with Tweekend) with the high-end Carbon web additive creates a freestyle driven board that is equipped to take your riding to the next level. Specification: Profile: Freestyle (Flat) Running length: 121.84 Waist width: 24.70 Sidecut radius: 7.9 Setback: Centred Flex: Not specified (Specification based on the 155cm board) Note: Topsheet and base colours are size specific and may vary Features: The Freestyle baseline has long flat zone that extends right through from the start of the nose to the start of the tail with no camber or rocker sections. The increased base contact makes for a fast ride with an incredibly forgiving feel. K2 have flattened and extended the nose and tail to produce their trade mark Tweekends. This provides a larger platform by increasing the base contact right to the tips. This gives you a bigger and more stable platform for presses, landings and increased float in powder. With a sidewall that extends along the effective edge and flows into in the nose and tail Hybritech construction provides the benefits of low swing-weight, optimised turn initiation and durability. A Twin Hyper Progressive sidecut is an infinite blend of different radius designed to be responsive at high speeds but smooth enough for butters. The true twin shape of the board requires a twin sidecut so the board feels exactly the same whether it’s ridden regular or switch. Three species of renewable wood run tip-to-tail to make up the W2 Core. This construction provides optimised strength, weight reduction and dampening without additional materials. Combined Triax/Biax Glass provide the perfect balance of smooth all-purpose performance with a stiffer torsional flex for improved edge hold and stability. The NEW Carbon Web I additive brings pop and snap closer to the bindings. Extending from the outermost binding inserts to the edges (in L shapes), Carbon Web transfers energy out to the parts of the board that really effect edge grip and turn initiation. 4000 Sintered Base is the fastest natural base material available. It Absorbs wax deeper and retains it for longer and is also exceptionally durable. The Hit Machine is a freestyle board with versatility. The flat profile with Tweekend is incredibly fun, even on the ‘bad whether’ days when butters are the order of the day, but don’t think that this board is a super-soft noodle. It has fairly stiff torsional flex as a result of the Carbon Web and Triax fibreglass laminate and that makes it an all encompassing ‘park board’ that can tackle rails and big ‘hits’ alike. Is it for me? It’s ideal for the resort rider that wants to maximise fun whatever the conditions. Freestyle riders that want a looser and more forgiving feel will be a home on the Freestyle Baseline, whilst the pop and stability from Carbon Web means you’ll be hitting both the rails and pro line kickers with confidence.
From linking your first turns to board sliding your first rail, the Slogan is as progression friendly as it gets. Magma Edge Absorber is a thin strip of rubber between the sidewall and the metal edge to iron out any unwanted bumps and vibrations. TPU Spacers keep the tips durable and light, reducing swing-weight and upping your spin game to the next level. Tough enough to handle concrete ledges and triple kink handrails, the Extruded BA 4.4 Duraspeed Base is easy to repair and doesn’t require regular waxing. True twin rocker boards are ideal for getting the basics nailed and are often the boards of choice for advanced jibbers – ridding rails in the park and using any natural or man-made features around the resort to jump, stall and slide. If you have even the slightest interest in freestyle then you should have a board like this in your quiver. Especially at the price we are selling it for!
The Social offers more bang for your buck with some great tech features and as such it has become an extremely popular board for a whole host of female riders. The true twin shape and flex makes it popular with park riders, the Flat Top profile, which is flat in the middle with rocker at the tips, improves its powder-riding abilities and the soft flex with Scoop tip and tail shaping makes it progression friendly. This durable and responsive true twin freestyle board has become increasingly popular with the Capita team riders. The new XXX(truded) base is harder and therefore more resilient than standard extruded bases and the zero camber profile makes it easy to ride whilst remaining poppy and dependable. Specification: Profile: Zero camber Running length: 1166 Waist width: 25.00 Sidecut radius: 8.00 Setback: Centred Flex (1 soft, 10 stiff): 5 (Specification based on the 156cm board) Features: Zero Camber is flat from contact point to contact point. The result is a longer effective edge than that of a rocker profile but with a looser feel than you get from camber. Vertically laminated strips of poplar wood make up the SS Select Core. There are no irregularities in the grain or finger joints which allows for a consistent and uniform flex throughout the board. Kevlar is one of the strongest and most durable materials available and carbon remains one of the most responsive and lightweight. The combined use of Kevlar and carbon in the 2x20mm Carbon + Kevlar X which is positioned in the middle of the board in an X shape improves underfoot stability whilst allowing for a forgiving flex in the nose and tail. To improve durability in key break zones Black Fleece is used. This black glass increases strength and reduces the chance of board failure. Extruded bases are both durable and easy to maintain which is ideal if you aren’t one for waxing your board regularly. The XXX(truded) Base is subjected to higher temperatures and more pressure during manufacture than regular extruded bases which further increases the surface hardness. I think it’s impossible not to have a good time riding this board. Come to think of it I haven’t ridden a zero camber board that I didn’t like. What I like about boards like the Outdoor Living is that the entire edge and contacts points are ready to engage the moment you want them to but are super forgiving if you get your balance wrong on landing or mid butter. Is it for me? Not only is it ideal for the park rats out there who want to slide, bonk, jump and spin everything that stands in their way, but the Outdoor Living would make an ideal board for the improving snowboarder that wants a confidence inspiring board that turns easily at slow speeds and is virtually catch free.
