No-one trusts humanity. No-one can quite understand why we're intent on destroying the only place we have to live in the Universe. No-one thinks we're worth a second thought. & certainly no-one is about to let us get off Rrth. That would be a complete disaster. But one alien thinks Rrth is worth looking at. Not humanity obviously we're appalling but until we manage to kill every other living thing on the planet there are some truly wonderful places on Rrth & some wonderful creatures living in them. Best take a look while they're still there. But on one trip to Rrth our alien biologist causes a horrendous accident. The occupants of a car travelling down a lonely road spot his ship (the sort of massive lemon coloured lemon shaped starship that really shouldn't be hanging in the sky over a road). Understandably the Bradbury's crash (interrupting the latest in a constant procession of bitter rows). & in the wreckage of their car our alien discovers a baby girl. She needs rescuing. From the car. From Rrth. From her humanity. & now eleven years later a girl called Terra is about to go to school for the first time. It's a very alien experience...T ERRA is a charming & hilarious satirical fable. A story about how odd & alien we are. & a story about how human odd aliens are. It tells the story of a girl who grows up in a very different world who gains a unique perspective on our world & a unique perspective on her new home. A girl who can teach us & them a lot. A girl living in an extraordinary world that is spiralling into a terrible war. ...

Terracotta Army

The Terracotta Army is one of the greatest and most famous archaeological discoveries of all time. 6 000 life-size figures of warriors and horses were interred in the Mausoleum of the First Emperor of China - each is individually carved and they are thought to represent real members of the emperors army. This is the remarkable story of their creation the man who ordered them made their rediscovery and their continuing legacy as a pre-eminent symbol of Chinese greatness. The First Emperor Qin Shi Huang was king of the Chinese state of Qin and the first man to unite China into a single empire. He built the first Great Wall and brought a single written script to the whole country. He was an inspired and ruthless ruler but one also beset by paranoia and a desire for immortality. He is still
considered the founding father of the modern state of China. On his death in 210 BC he was buried in a giant mausoleum near modern-day Xian. Legends of the treasures contained therein still tantalize the imagination today. In 1974 local farmers digging a well for water broke through into the burial mound and found the first of the Terracotta warriors. Further excavations have revealed the full splendour of the buried army. But the majority of the mausoleum is yet to be opened including the burial chamber itself - myth tells us that amongst the treasures yet to be uncovered is a vast map of the First Emperors kingdom with rivers marked with channels of flowing mercury. The story of the First Emperor and the Terracotta Army is a fascinating one not least for the discoveries yet to be made.
